Responsibilities

The Maintenance Mechanic position is located at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Maintenance Mechanic duties include, but are not limited to:

-Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently to determine the layout of work sequences relating to the materials used as well as the space availability.

-Plans and carries out projects from initial layout to completion, focusing on accuracy, spacing, fit, and structural soundness.

-Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the construction through finish required to put out the best product.

-Setup and operate a wide variety of shop and portable construction tools within the function of assigned projects.

-Uses wood, metal, composite materials, counter tops, suspended ceilings, trim, brick, cinder block, various flooring, drywall, finishing fasteners for project completion.

-Constructs, installs, repairs, demolishes, and modifies metal, wood, and wood substitute structures - these include but are not limited to; building frames, concrete forms, walls, doors frames, interior trim, window frames, and modular furniture.

-Assembles items with a variety of joining techniques utilizing attachment variations including glue, screw, and nail fasteners, as well as close fit mitered joints.

-Repairs/installs masonry projects laying common/ face brick, firebrick, cinder block, glass block, terra cotta, as well as various artificial and natural stone in the construction or repair of such items as walls, walkways, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, boilers, and catch basins.

-Performs repair/finish of drywall or plastering on a variety of settings utilizing joint compounds , plaster, tape, patches, and applicable fasteners.

-Prepares surfaces using hand or power tools, resins, pre-coating agents, as well as various compounds to remove, fill, smooth, shape, and level surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly to imperfections.

-Applies coating materials including paint, varnishes, and shellacs utilizing correct industry standard application devices. Uses coating techniques that ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected, and free from drips/runs.

-Meets the needs of customers while supporting the Medical Center. Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to the established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.


Work Schedule: Various tours available including: (Mon-Fri, 8-4:30pm),(Wed-Sun, 8am-4:30pm), (Mon-Fri, 3:30pm-Midnight), and (Sat-Wed, 3:30pm-Midnight)

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must be able to lift and carry heavy objects (occasionally in excess of 40 pounds) and hold them in awkward positions while they are being installed or removed. Incumbent must be able to work for prolonged periods while kneeling, crouching, stooping and/or standing in awkward positions and to climb and work from ladders, man lifts, scaffolding, and roofs.
