Job Description:

The Turnaround Arts program fuels whole-school transformation in communities working to solve deep racial and economic inequities through strategic use of the arts in elementary and middle schools. The program is focused on equity through the lens of social emotional learning, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and shared leadership. Through ambitious and strategic arts investments - aimed at impacting every hallway, every classroom, every staff member, and every student in the school - Turnaround Arts bolsters efforts for whole-school change. The program provides tangible arts education resources and services to each local program partner and school, including arts supplies, musical instruments, school musicals, teacher trainings, and more to increase chances of success, engage communities, and raise the visibility of school achievements.

The objective of the Operations Manager is to:
  • Oversee the execution of program operations including budget, program design, and evaluation of events and services
  • Direct the conceptualization and execution of Turnaround Arts annual events and projects as they occur, including annual local program trainings and summer leadership retreats
  • Manage the hiring process of all Turnaround Arts staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers
  • Coach entire Turnaround Arts staff and other Kennedy Center colleagues in program methodology, strategy, and operations
  • Supervise and evaluate external relations team projects and tasks, and consult on and support implementation team projects and tasks
  • Collaborate closely with Turnaround Arts senior leadership to develop and execute strategic goals for the program
  • Serve as primary liaison between the Turnaround Arts program and other Kennedy Center divisions and departments in executing program goals

This position reports directly to the National Director of Turnaround Arts at the Kennedy Center, and coaches all other Turnaround Arts staff and contractors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

65% Program Leadership, Administration, Management, and Operations
  • Execute the program vision laid out by the National Director
  • Oversee the execution of program operations including budget, program design, and evaluation of events and services
  • Direct the conceptualization and execution of design, budget, logistics, and evaluation for all major annual events, including local program trainings and summer leadership retreats; consults with appropriate Turnaround Arts staff and contractors responsible for session content
  • Manage the hiring process of all Turnaround Arts staff, contractors, interns and volunteers, including but not limited to recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching and managing performance when applicable
  • Manage entire Turnaround Arts staff and office systems through regular staff meetings, one-on-one coaching sessions and check-ins with all team members, and quarterly strategic planning sessions
  • Collaborate closely with Turnaround Arts senior leadership to develop and execute strategic goals for the program
  • Coach entire Turnaround Arts staff and other Kennedy Center colleagues in program methodology, strategy, and operations
  • Serve as primary liaison between the Turnaround Arts program and other Kennedy Center divisions and departments in executing program goals

20% External Relations Team Operations
  • Ensure that the national program prioritizes national and local program visibility and branding
  • Supervise and evaluate external relations team operations and systems, including but not limited to high-profile artist engagement, school and local program site visits, technical assistance and coaching to local program staff, fundraising, public relations, speaking engagements, newsletters, and other external relations opportunities
  • Collaborate regularly with Kennedy Center development, public relations, and other departments to leverage external relations opportunities for maximum impact and mutual satisfaction

15% Implementation Team Operations
  • Consult on implementation team operations and systems, including but not limited to local program and school application cycles, formalized agreements with all national and local program partners, messaging to the national educational community, national program evaluation, documentation and data systems, site support, program development, and network sustainability
  • Support the creation and refinement of all local program-facing tools and processes, such as in-kind partner resources and professional learning opportunities
  • Review and approve all large coordinated communications efforts with schools and local programs to ensure program consistency, accountability, and efficiency

Key Qualifications:
  • Must possess a minimum of eight years' work experience in communications, administration, community organizing, the arts, and/or education. Time working on national arts education initiatives and events from an office environment at a large institution is a plus.
  • Should possess an undergraduate degree in communications, administration, community organizing, the arts, and/or education.
  • Should possess experience supervising employees and organizing/prioritizing a large volume of work.

  • Excellent computer skills - You are computer literate with typing speed of at least 50 words per minute; advanced Word, Publisher, PowerPoint and Outlook skills are preferred; advanced Excel and Google Drive skills are essential.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel in order to operate computer keyboard, office equipment, and other essential tasks. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position infrequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

Travel up to 10% may be required.
