Media Relations Manager The Media Relations Manager reports to the Senior Director, Communications to execute media and communications strategies. This position will manage AWEA's media relations activities by maximizing our industry's coverage by the news media; produces collateral material for public audiences; organizes, promotes, and staffs media events; oversees an effective measurement protocol and produces reports of activities and results in order to demonstrate effectiveness of media outreach efforts. The Manager's responsibilities will include managing news media relations, generating and distributing content, event management and promotion, and departmental and organizational administration duties. Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities Work closely with Senior Director, Communications to develop talking points, press materials, and other communications and press materials. Coordinate closely with AWEA subject matter experts to translate content into compelling public messages. Execute messaging around AWEA board priority issues, including transmission, market reform, carbon, siting and wildlife, tax policy, state RPS, offshore wind regulations. Manage public release of the AWEA Annual Market Report, Quarterly Market Reports, and other reports and white papers. Managing news media relations Manage media monitoring and production of AWEA's daily clips including supervising any approved contractors. This includes regularly reviewing AWEA's media monitoring platforms for critical wind energy news and competitor news daily. Develop relationships with key energy, environment, and business reporters, directly or by facilitating interviews with other AWEA staff members. Track and evaluate media coverage for message pull through and to understand media perspectives and interests; identify need for corrections in stories and corrective briefings. Generating and distributing content Reach out to and serve as ongoing liaison to communications officers and spokespeople for member companies and partner organizations. Learn of industry news, obtain their participation in our events and releases, and solicit their help in distributing AWEA's news. Write press releases, blog articles, case studies, executive bylines and other collateral for the media that advance AWEA's strategic priorities. Event management and promotion Organize press events and conference calls, panel discussions, and other outreach events. Pitch the news media on covering our press events and other AWEA conferences and workshops, working with conference staff and AWEA's public relations firm and contractors when available. Publicize and help staff AWEA's annual flagship event, WINDPOWER, annual advocacy event American Wind Week, and other AWEA events as needed. Departmental and organizational administration Conduct regular outreach to AWEA member companies and partner organizations to learn their needs and issues and obtain their participation in the above work. Join the rest of the department's staff in carrying out administrative duties, such as: weekly board reports; vendor and intern supervision; timely invoice and expense reporting; and maintaining master calendars and checklists of standard operating procedures. Knowledge, skills and abilities Proficient with MS Office; self-starter, detail-oriented, proactive, able to multi-task and prioritize. Able to adhere to timelines for phone and email responses, project deadlines, and the Associated Press Style Guide; have strong communication skills (both written and verbal), and strong collaborative and organizational skills. A passion for renewable energy and the tenacity for quality, time-sensitive work is a plus. Preferred qualifications are: Bachelor's degree in related field and 5-7 years of relevant communications industry experience. Agency experience preferred. Existing specialized energy-related communications, policy, media relations, and relationships with national and state energy, environment or business reporters a plus.
