Responsibilities

In this CBP mission-critical position, you will serve as the subject matter expert in health and safety programs and strategic initiatives that have a national and international impact on operations CBP-wide, reporting directly to the Deputy Commissioner of CBP.

This position starts at a salary of $127,914.00 (SL-127,914) to $192,300.00 (SL-192,300).

In this Physician position, you will serve as the Chief Medical Officer and principal advisor to the Deputy Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). You will advise on complex medical issues and polices concerning the migrant populations at the U.S. border. You will research matters and provide the Deputy Commissioner with recommendations, policy proposals and solutions.
  • Researching matters and providing the Deputy Commissioner with recommended policy proposals and solutions.
  • Providing CBP with the application of professional medical knowledge and direction in national and strategic programs and initiatives provided by management to deal constructively with the escalating health and medical threats of migrants in custody of CBP.
  • Providing case management and oversight for migrants housed in CBP facilities, as well as a complete review of CBP's health and medical capabilities.
  • Providing oversight, clinical direction, consultation, and medical authority for CBP's emergency medical services (e.g., EMT, Advanced EMT, paramedic, and austere medic).
  • Leading the overall medical, health, and safety vision and direction for the organization and providing medical guidance to CBP executives.

  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link) ; Association of American Medical Colleges (external link) ; Liaison Committee on Medical Education ; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association , or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates , a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre-medical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
  • Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada.


Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Specialized Experience: You qualify for the SL level position if you possess 1 year of specialized experience that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level performing duties such as:.
  • Experience providing inpatient and outpatient medical care in all aspects of health care delivery in accordance with current accepted medical practice and procedures.
  • Experience providing physical examinations, physical assessment in correlation with historical findings, records preliminary objective findings.
  • Experience providing treatment, emergency medical/surgical services as required, treat severe trauma cases, rehabilitative, diagnostic modalities and prescribing medication.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as number of hours worked per week) spent in the activities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
