Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information. FCHD is seeking highly motivated, passionate Public Health Nurses who are eager to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to promote health initiatives designed to engage the community and to advance health. Clinical Public Health nurses provide various services such as pregnancy testing and counseling, maternity services, public health assessment, international travel vaccinations, newcomer (refugee) services, sexually transmitted infection treatment and follow up, HIV testing and counseling, tuberculosis screening and treatment, adult and childhood immunizations to individuals, families, and targeted at-risk populations in a clinical setting. Provides appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment of clients following public health standards of care. Utilizes a variety of nursing skills to meet identified needs of clients in a clinic setting. Collaborates with other service providers to promote comprehensive community-centered health care. Identifies gaps in community resources and shares with appropriate department staff who can work with community partners to build service capacity.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus one year of work experience in a public health/community health setting; or two years of full-time post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
Valid motor vehicle driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working in a public health or community health services setting providing a variety of preventive health services in a fast-paced clinical setting. Preferred candidates will have experience working with diverse populations using a team approach for service delivery. Must possess strong critical thinking skills, demonstrate problem-solving skills, and the ability to exercise sound judgment. Ideal candidates will have experience working with children in a clinical setting. Phlebotomy experience highly desirable. Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing. Models outstanding customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications such as an electronic medical records system.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a sanction screening, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, tuberculosis tes, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor. The incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and possess the ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing. Employee must be able to drive a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
