Summary

About the Position: This position is located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Incumbent will function as a high level professional registered nurse and interact with multidisciplinary teams, patients and families in a clinical settings. Work frequently requires long periods of sitting and standing, mixed with walking from facility to facility, within the hospital complex, to coordinate care needs of the trauma patients.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor effectiveness of trauma program through design, development, and coordination of the trauma care services, quality improvement program. Collects and analyzes data to reevaluate the program and develops new or revised protocols.
  • Evaluate all phases of trauma care, through continuous audits, periodic focus audits, specific case reviews, trend analysis, and data from staff and patient records, etc.
  • Identify problem areas and strategies for resolution, applying knowledge of trauma nursing and critical care. Data analysis/trends and recommend courses of action for improvements.
  • Gather concurrent and retrospective data for trauma registry, and other required records and reports, as requested by authorized persons and regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and make recommendations for changes in services and systems using performance improvement methodologies (DSA, Failure Mode Effect Analysis, Lean Six Sigma).
  • Recommend changes necessary for a multi-disciplinary approach to the pre-hospital, hospital, and rehabilitative phases of trauma care.
  • Create Fishbone diagrams, incorporates Lean Six sigma in program and coordinate patient safety (investigation and targeted audits).
  • Monitor exceptions, deviations, and differences from established protocols and standards of care, to identify and report problems. Research literature for best practices, write reports, design forms, retrieve and present data from registries.
  • Maintain current knowledge in trauma patient management by attending seminars, meetings, and classes, specific to the trauma specialty.
  • Monitor compliance for the American College of Surgeons Level II Verification, identification of performance improvement quality assurance (PI/QA) trends.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience, license, and education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic requirement for GS-610 Nurse Specialist:

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts at the time of application)

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of application)

License/Registration: Applicants must pass the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, you must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: One year of experience which includes: providing nursing care for patients in a critical care setting such as an Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, or Perioperative Department; monitoring effectiveness of trauma/acute care surgical programs and making recommendations for changes in services and systems using performance improvement methodologies (fishbone diagrams, Lean Six Sigma, Failure Mode Effect Analysis are examples); collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team in analyzing quality health care for trauma/acute care surgical patients; utilizing electronic health care systems to collects concurrent and retrospective data for patient care and updating patient medical records. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
