US - Frederick, MD/BID How will you make an impact?The successful candidate will be well-versed in the design and synthesis of lipids and polymersused for the delivery of macromolecules as well as the final formulation of these compounds for in vivo and in vitro work. The successful candidate will lead a group of scientists on new product development projects related to transfection (DNA, mRNA), protein delivery, protein expression and cell culture, evaluating new technologies and troubleshooting/improving existing technologies within the Thermo Fisher product commercialization process under the Gibco brand. What will you do? Manage a group of 3 -4 scientists working on new technology and reagent development.The successful candidate will be a bench organic chemist well versed in fundamental organic synthesis and analysis who enjoys working in an iterative and multidisciplinary environment.An independent scientist who is able to design and execute a multiple step synthesis of molecules used in cell and molecular biology applications.The initial emphasis will be on macromolecular modification and analysis especially in the synthesis of lipids and polymers and formulation of such molecules for in vivo and cell culture applications with further emphasis on downstream protein/cellular interactions.This will develop into multi step synthesis of molecules used in the various cell biology groups as the need arises.Write procedure and technical reports that are used in the laboratory.Will maintain accurate lab notebooks and training files in accordance with relevant Thermo Fisher required standards to support patent application and defense as well as other international standards (eg, ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.).Will also prepare and present experimental data summaries, protocol writing and publication in peer reviewed journals of relevant findings.Perform literature searches related to products under development and new idea generation.Work with customers to troubleshoot problems and understand unmet needs.Will make contributions to scientific literature and conferences and comply with all company safety regulations and procedures.How will you get here?EducationPh.D. degree with demonstrated background in organic chemistry and analytical analysis Experience7-10+ years of relevant experience in Organic Chemistry with a specific focus on lipid and polymer delivery of macromoleculesExperience leading a team of PhD / Masters level scientists Must be versed in purification based on flash chromatography and preparative HPLC. Must be capable of adopting new methods of purification and analysis as the need arisesExperience in product development (stage gate/phase gate) processesDemonstrated ability to transfer methods from the R&D environment to Manufacturing for productionExperience in manufacturing process development and product validation and verification. Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesMust have a working knowledge of running a mass spec instrument (LC-MS) and HPLC as well as a good knowledge of analysis and interpretation of MS, NMR (H1 & C13), FT-IR etc.Must enjoy working with scientists engaged in research and development of products in the forefront of cell and molecular biology.
