The Strategic and Data Science Initiatives Program is part of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Directorate. The SDSI program aims to establish new and extend current initiatives and strategic collaborations in computing and data science to address key cancer challenges, accelerate cancer research and advance predictive oncology. The SDSI program leads innovative efforts to impact and accelerate cancer research in multiple areas including increasing application of high-performance computing and AI, strategic use of data science education to build communities of practice, transforming use of large-scale data and cutting-edge data science in cancer research, and developing novel and sustainable collaborations across the NCI, academic, government, industry and international organizations. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES-THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING APPROVAL Strategic and Data Science Initiatives Director The SDSI Director is responsible for advancing strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts within the Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Directorate. These responsibilities include serving as a leader for BIDS collaborative HPC and data science efforts with the US Department Energy, leading efforts to accelerate cancer research through expanded application of high-performance computing and AI in precision and predictive oncology and providing vision and leadership to accelerate cancer research and clinical application with broader awareness and adoption of data management and data science approaches. The SDSI Director will lead a group of experienced and highly-motivated team leaders, delivering excellence on required tasks and activities. The SDSI Director will also work closely with the BIDS leadership and others to sustain and extend existing collaborations while and identifying and developing support for new collaborative initiatives to advance the mission of the Frederick National Laboratory in areas including HPC, data science, biomedical informatics, and computational technologies, building upon the current foundation of activities and efforts across the BIDS directorate. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Master's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for US equivalency. In addition to educational requirement, a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible job-related experience including three (3) years of experience in a leadership capacity. Track record of innovation in computational life science, data science, and/or AI environments Experience with use of computational approaches applied to cancer challenges Proven ability to work collaboratively across groups, teams and organizations Experience leading efforts and/or teams in high-performance computing and/or data-driven research environments Experience working in complex multi-organizational initiatives with ability to build support for new ideas Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS A PhD degree in any quantitative science is preferred Proven team leadership Expected Competencies: Deep understanding of and experience in high-performance computing Experience with deep learning, machine learning or other forms of AI Familiarity with software development processes Experience with application of large-scale computational models in life sciences Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills Excellent organizational skills across projects, collaborations, and new initiatives Experience with budget development, activity tracking and reporting Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE) | Minority/Female/Disabled/Veteran (M/F/D/V) | Drug Free Workplace (DFW)
