The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 93,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services, is seeking a State Policy Analyst to join our Division of State Advocacy located in our Washington, DC office to help implement the AVMA s state legislative and regulatory initiatives . The mission of the Association is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health. Reporting to the Division Director, the State Policy Analyst will work collaboratively with AVMA staff and volunteer entities to conduct related research, assist in developing the AVMA s state-level agenda, and plan and attend approved programs and events designed to facilitate distribution of the AVMA s public policy perspective and to educate and assist state and allied veterinary medical associations with state-level legislative and regulatory issues that impact veterinary medicine. They will assist in identification, review, analysis, compilation, and dissemination of information about bills, statutes, regulations, local ordinances, judicial actions, and pending proposals that impact the practice of veterinary medicine. The qualified candidate must have a BA/BS degree in political science, public policy or a related field or equivalent experience, law degree or paralegal certificate a plus , with 2 years of related experience in public policy as legislative staff, legal counsel, or with a professional or trade association. A demonstrable interest in legislative and regulatory affairs is required; experience in scientific or health-related public policy is a plus. Must be able to review and analyze legislative and regulatory language for information relevant to veterinary medicine and write concise summaries with the ability to clearly define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and convey related information in an effective and timely fashion. Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with outstanding computer skills (ie, proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, social media and various internet browsers and search engines). Familiarity with legislative and legal research programs such as Fiscal Note and Westlaw is desired. Must be comfortable speaking at public events and be able to present information effectively; up to 10% travel. Application deadline is 12/8/19.
