As a Student Trainee (Health Insurance), GS-0199-7/9, you will work under the general supervision of the immediate director to which the incumbent is assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in analyzing and reviewing health care policies to ensure accuracy and consistency with legislation, regulations, and statutes and laws.
  • Provide technical assistance on a variety of materials to include correspondence and technical briefings for senior officials.
  • Assist in the coordination, planning, development of CMS's correspondence, decision memoranda, other issue papers, and written reports.
  • Conduct analytical studies and evaluate the effectiveness of health care program initiatives by gathering, organizing, and interpreting data.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:

To be eligible for the CMS Pathways - Internship Program, an individual must have been accepted for enrollment or be enrolled and seeking a degree (e.g., diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution/program on a full or half-time basis for the current semester (FALL 2019). - AND -
Possess and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on the unweighted 4.0 scale. GPA is based on current enrollment. NOTE: Students enrolled in a school or college that utilizes a Pass/Fail grading system are required to submit an unofficial transcript which must include the Institutions legend that documents the Pass/Fail equivalency.

TRANSCRIPTS or other applicable education documents (e.g., acceptance letter) are required at the time of application to verify program eligibility.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • GS-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; OR eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) Provision AND completion of a Bachelor's degree.
Superior Academic Achievement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
AND one of the following provisions of superior academic achievement. NOTE: If you are claiming
S.A.A. you must provide an unofficial transcript at the time of application that documents this claim:
  • A grade-point average of "B" (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study. For example, 2.95 is rounded to 3.0, and 2.94 is rounded to 2.94.
  • A grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all required courses completed in your major field of study, or those required courses in your major completed in the last two years of your undergraduate study.
  • Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision.
  • Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.
  • GS-09: Possession of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full year's of progressively higher graduate level education leading to such a degree or L.L. B. or J.D., if related to the position being filled.

1 full academic year of graduate education is made based on normal course loads for a full year of study in the graduate program. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement.

TRANSCRIPTS are required at the time of application to verify satisfactory completion of education as part of the program eligibility and qualification requirements. You must submit an unofficial transcript from your Institution attesting to your possession of the required education. All unofficial transcripts must include the following: current overall GPA, enrollment status, major, and the number of credits for each course. If you do not submit a transcript indicating your possession of the required education, you will not be considered for this position.

Upon successful completion of the permanent Intern program, the employee MAY be eligible for a conversion to a career, career-conditional, or term appointment. The position to which converted may have a full-performance level up to a GS-12.

Schedule:
Employees are eligible to work Full-time defined as 40 hours a week OR Part-time defined as 16 to 32 hours per week.
