We are looking for a Legal Assistant to provide administrative support to our attorneys, such as sending and sorting mail, copying and scanning, and using our internal time tracking system. The role is crucial to our office's important work protecting workers' rights, and a successful candidate will be hardworking, organized, comfortable with , open to learning new skills, and team-oriented. Responsibilities

This position provides administrative support to attorneys in the Fair Labor Standards Division, part of the Solicitor's Office within the U.S. Department of Labor. Our office assists in the enforcement of laws that protect workers' rights, which include receiving minimum wage and overtime pay the use of family and medical leave. We work with other offices and agencies within the Department of Labor and around the government, and we produce legal briefs, regulations, memoranda, and other documents.

This position is part of our support staff team, who together assist our attorneys in doing their work and make our office function. The person selected for this position will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Receiving and screening visitors to our office and callers to our main office telephone line. Visitors and callers must be handled politely and directed appropriately.
  • Opening and correctly sorting mail sent to the Division; delivering documents to and retrieving documents from other offices within the Department.
  • Inputting data into our time recording system, including creating new "matters" under which attorneys can record time and closing matters when they are complete.
  • Providing assistance to attorneys, such as with making binders, scanning documents, making copies, sending mail, etc. upon request. These tasks must be handled promptly and according to the attorney's instructions.
  • Assist with maintaining organization and cleanliness in our office suite, including ensuring printers are functional, supplies are available and easy to find, and hard-copy documents are scanned so they are available to attorneys electronically.
  • Performing other tasks, often in coordination with other support staff or in their place if they are unavailable, to ensure that our office runs smoothly and all attorneys have the assistance they need.

Qualifications

Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, in the Federal Service.

GS-06

To be qualified for the GS-06 Legal Assistant, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience reviewing legal documents for conformance with procedural requirements, grammatical/legal accuracy; maintaining legal files; handling legal correspondence; tracking all legal correspondence to ensure deadlines are met, etc., that has provided you with the specific knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

GS-07

To be qualified for the GS-07 Legal Assistant, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing support to attorneys/paralegals; applying appropriate legal procedures in writing correspondence and processing cases; maintaining files for follow-up dates; assisting attorneys/paralegals in preparing for cases/hearings, etc., which has provided you with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

GS-08

To be qualified for the GS-08 Legal Assistant, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing support to attorneys, paralegals and management; applying appropriate legal procedures in writing correspondence and processing cases and preparing non-legal correspondence; knowledge of applicable court rules and appropriate styles used when creating and finalizing legal documents, maintaining a tracking system for activities and files for follow-up dates; processing docketing requests, preparing written documents and materials using automated applications, and providing legal assistance and technical work to enter, store and update automated docket databases.
