The George Mason University, Research and Innovation Initiatives invites applicants for Executive Director, Institute for a Sustainable Earth.

Responsibilities: Research and Innovation Initiatives invites leaders who are collaborative, strategic, insightful and have a proven track record of successful initiatives to apply for this exciting position. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Research Innovation, the Executive Director provides all operational leadership for ISE. Working collaboratively with the Scientific Director, university leadership and the 500+ engaged faculty, the Executive Director will continue to shape ISE to fully realize the aspirations of this important institute. The Executive Director provides administrative leadership, supervising all institute staff and entering into agreements as needed with partner organizations.

About the Institute for a Sustainable Earth: The Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE) has been designed to connect members of the Mason community with others across the Mason community - and with other communities, policy-makers, businesses and organizations - to address the world's pressing sustainability and resilience challenges. ISE will support the university level transdisciplinary center for advanced study, Center for Resilient and Sustainable Communities (C-RASC), as well as any other university level centers with relevant research. A community of several hundred faculty have come together to support the goals of ISE. Together, they represent a range of academic disciplines from every college on campus. ISE will amplify the work of these faculty and the college level centers to which they belong by serving as a connector, convener and communicator. ISE will form strategic partnerships that enable opportunities for Mason faculty and students to collaborate externally, enhancing the research and scholarship portfolio and reputation of the university. Finally, ISE will engage deeply with local, state, and federal government agencies on topics relevant to the institute.

Position Summary:

The primary duties of this position include: Operational Direction and Oversight * Provide strategic direction for the operational activities of the institute. Anticipate needs; support team formation and development; and hire, onboard, and lead employees as needed in alignment with the goals and needs of ISE; * Responsible for all financial activities associated with ISE. Set budget, provide financial oversight of all activities, and support fundraising and sponsored research activities for ISE faculty teams; * Work with faculty and administrators in all relevant academic units to understand, nurture and advance the research and innovation interests; * Promote partnerships and research teams to enhance transdisciplinary research conducted by ISE. Network with and form relationships with external partners. Enter into MOUs with partner organizations that promote the goals of ISE; * Ensure that all reporting is completed for funding provided to faculty teams and analyze the outcomes from these investment; and * Develop a conference/convening schedule to highlight the work of ISE and further build reputation and partnerships. Direct the planning for and operations of these events.

Strategic Direction and Communication * Work collaboratively with University leadership, the Scientific Director, and engaged faculty to refine the strategic plan, mission, and goals of ISE and provide operational direction to meet these goals; * Host events and foster opportunities for strategic presence at conferences and other external events to highlight the work of ISE and further build reputation and partnerships; * Communicate regularly with the ISE community to ensure opportunities for full participation by interested faculty, staff, and students; * Strategically engage specific faculty when opportunities for external funding or partnerships arise; * Create high impact communications about ISE to better engage and inform potential partners, funders, and Mason leadership; * Work collaboratively with economic development, academic, industry, and state partners to support growth of the sustainability and resilience research and translation ecosystem; * Collaborate closely with Research Services, Research Development, Graduate Affairs, Undergraduate Affairs, Technology Transfer, Environmental Health and Safety, colleges, and other relevant university units to ensure integration with other university activities and support for furthering the ISE strategic goals.

Required Qualifications: * A Master's degree in a discipline relevant to the work of ISE; * Knowledge of and experience with proposal development and supporting team science; * 5-7 years of experience directly managing research development and/or support activities.

Preferred Qualifications: * A terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the work of ISE (Ph.D. or similar); * 8-10 years of experience leading research development and/or support activities; * Experience developing major proposals for external support; * Experience working closely with a variety of external stakeholders (local, state and federal government, NGOs, private sector, etc.); * Experience in a large dispersed university environment.
