Assistant Professor of Genetics
The George Mason University Department of Biology, within the College of Science (COS), invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Genetics, beginning August 2020. About Us: The Department of Biology includes 12 tenured and tenure-track and 14 term faculty focused on undergraduate and graduate education. The Department has over 1300 undergraduate majors and hires 56 Graduate Teaching Assistants as well as adjunct faculty. Faculty from the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, the School of Systems Biology, the School of Integrative Studies, and the STEM Accelerator Program also contribute to the biology department through courses and research collaborations. Responsibilities: Candidates are expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized and externally funded research program in their area of expertise, and teach and advise in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs. Teaching responsibilities will include a lecture section of a core course for undergraduates in both fall and spring semesters and graduate courses such as Human Genetics and/or Evolutionary Genetics, which will contribute to newly developing graduate programs. The new hire will also have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists at Inova, Northern Virginia's leading nonprofit healthcare center, located 15 miles from the Mason Fairfax campus.
Required Qualifications: * Completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline by August 15, 2020; * Share the department's commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction; * Demonstrate excellence in both teaching and research; and * The ability to collaborate with faculty and graduate students.
Preferred qualifications: * The ideal candidate will have a proven record of external research funding. * The ideal candidate will have access to significant resources at the Science and Technology campus including the Microbiome Analysis Center, the National Center for Biodefense and Infections Disease and the Institute for Biohealth Innovation. * The ideal candidates will have expertise in the one of the following areas: human/medical genetics, genetics related to infectious diseases, quantitative genetics, functional genomics, and genetic engineering.
