This position is located in the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, Office of Pesticide Programs, Antimicrobials Division, Risk Assessment and Science Support Branch. If selected, you must work at the location stated in this announcement.

Responsibilities

At the entry level of this position, you will:

- Examine scientific data from a wide variety of sources to assess risk resulting from the use of pesticide chemicals in various environments;

- Provide industrial hygiene support to implement and support the Office of Pesticide Programs risk assessment activities;

- Participate in conducting exposure analysis to support pesticide risk assessments and risk management decisions under the Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

- Research and apply federal laws and agency regulations which form the regulatory framework for pesticide usage.

You must meet all Recent Graduates program requirements by the closing date.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-07 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-05 level defined as assisting in the collection, analysis, or compilation of scientific data; OR 1 full year of graduate level education; or superior academic achievement ( Superior Academic Achievement Definition ) degree in the academic discipline as described below.

To qualify for the GS-09 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-07 level defined as collecting, analyzing, or compiling of scientific data as it relates to chemicals; OR master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the academic discipline as described below.

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Ability to analyze technical information related to pesticides; 2) Knowledge of industrial hygiene health standards; 3) Ability to apply industrial health science principles, practices, and/or procedures to evaluate hazards to human health and/or the environment; 4) Skill in using standard data gathering and/or analysis techniques; 5) Ability to review risk assessments; 6) Knowledge of laws, regulations and/or requirements related to pesticides.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

In addition to the eligibility requirements for Recent Graduates, this position has specific educational requirements in order to qualify as described below.

Industrial Hygienist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). NOTE: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

This is a Recent Graduates position in the Pathways program. This program provides individuals who have completed a qualifying associate's, bachelor's, master's, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate with an entry-level developmental experience with the potential to lead to a career in the Federal government after successfully completing the program. Your salary will be based on the grade level for which you are selected and the duty location of the position.

Except in special circumstances, those new to the federal government will be hired at the starting salary (step 1) of the applicable grade range listed above.

Position has portable work and selectee may be authorized to telework after meeting eligibility requirements if approved by the supervisor/manager.

If you are selected, travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid by EPA. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting to work in this position will be your responsibility.

Upon completion of the developmental program, you may be noncompetitively converted to a term or permanent position without further competition.
