Position Summary: The Policy Advocate/Counsel will play a key role in implementing Public Knowledge's mission and strategy through advocacy, policy and strategy development, and relationship building in Congress, at Federal agencies, within the Executive Branch and across the public interest field. Position Status: Full-time Location: Washington, DC Reports to: Public Knowledge Legal Director Essential Duties: Assist in developing and implementing Public Knowledge's policy strategy to promote free expression and open, affordable access to technology including topics such as intellectual property, broadband, and competition policy. Meet with key policymakers at the Federal Communications Commission, Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, State Attorneys General offices, the White House, Congress and elsewhere to build support for policies. Convene and/or work in coalition with various stakeholder groups to develop priorities and strategies. Research and draft documents such as congressional testimony for legislative hearings, advocacy documents, press releases, and regulatory filings. Serve as a resource and communicate well with allies and other non-D.C. based groups in building advocacy strategy and relationships with policymakers. Work with Public Knowledge's communications and campaign teams to develop communications and campaign strategies. Serve as a spokesperson and resource to the media within areas of expertise. Qualifications: A law degree and at least three years of experience in competition, communications, technology or copyright law and/or policy A bachelor's degree and more substantial experience in competition, communications, technology or copyright law and policy Substantial policy and/or political experience Demonstrated interest in public policy/public interest and the government decision making process Experience drafting legal/advocacy documents such as briefs and model legislation a plus Understanding of and previous experience advocating before federal agencies Demonstrated ability to create legal/advocacy strategies Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously High degree of professional ethics and integrity Sound judgment and ability to analyze situations and information Outstanding communication skills Compensation: Public Knowledge provides competitive compensation, excellent benefits and opportunities for professional growth.
