Job Description Smart City Works is looking for a highly effective leader with a strong ability to translate vision and strategy into execution. The Executive Director will lead and help build a new 501c3 nonprofit organization created to tackle urban challenges through training and educational programs that foster economic development, innovation, and improved livability of cities. The Executive Director will also lead a new initiative to develop a Smart Region in Northern Virginia and the greater Washington region. The Smart Region Initiative is funded in large part through the US Economic Development Administration's i6 Challenge Grant. The position is for creative 'leaders,' 'builders,' and 'doers': both the nonprofit and the Smart Region Initiative are new, with ample opportunity for thoughtful and detail-oriented individuals to lead the growth of a new organization and implementation of a highly visible initiative with national importance. You will be part of, and help transform, Northern Virginia and the greater Washington region into a global urban innovation hub and national test bed for new digital services and capabilities to improve the livability, sustainability, health, and resilience of cities and communities. Duties & Responsibilities The Executive Director will lead and run day-to-day operations of Smart City Works and the Northern Virginia Smart Region Initiative. Duties and responsibilities include: Oversee the implementation of the organization's vision and mission. Work closely with Smart City Works Board of Directors and associated partners and advisors to define and achieve the strategic direction, fundraising and operational goals of the organization. Prepare agendas, reports, and materials for board meetings. Develop and refine a holistic strategy and delivery plan and then own overall responsibility for successful implementation of the Smart Region Initiative, working closely with the CEO of Refraction, a key Initiative partner. Expand, build and partner with Smart City Works' networks to create and expand regional connectivity and improved innovation outcomes, to include: growth in the number of startups and highly skilled tech talent in the region; accelerated commercialization of innovative products; and greater economic development in partner communities. Create and nurture a strong team and network of sponsors, investors, interns, government and corporate partners. Direct and administer all operational aspects of the organization, to include program development, budget, HR, financial management, marketing, overall P&L responsibility and government grant program tracking and reporting. Design and plan marquee networking and thought leadership events to advance the mission and programmatic work of the organization. Fundraising. Develop resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization, to include, in particular for the flagship Smart Region Initiative program and associated program activities. Play a leadership role in Smart City Works' overall business growth and maturation: mentor new employees, assist in other programs, track key performance metrics, proactively work on strategic initiatives and develop meaningful and beneficial relationships across the Smart City Works ecosystem. QUALIFICATIONS/ POSITION SPECIFICATIONS Successful candidates will be motivated by mission and energized by delivering great programs. He or she will know how to lead organizations, to translate visions into strategies, strategies into programs, and to build partnerships and teams to deliver high value, impactful programs. He or she understands the demands of an operational role, is mindful of details and eager to build and work with a great team. They can thrive in a dynamic, startup environment, and by helping others succeed. Requirements : Transparent and high integrity leadership. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university or equivalent industry experience. 5-10 years cumulative experience in related fields; non-profit management experience preferred. Two or more years of direct experience developing training programs, building or training startup companies, and/or working in incubators or commercialization programs Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors. Successful track record of project design, budgeting and on-time delivery. High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization's strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors. A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results. Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community. Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers. Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation. Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting. Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong public speaking ability. Public speaking and community development is a central element of the job. Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy. Ability to think creatively, work in a casual, exciting, and dynamic global team environment Comfortable with a minimal amount of direction but high expectations of performance High attention to detail to track and account for many moving parts, to include schedules, resources, people, and activities, and ensure all are on track and properly accounted for. People love working with you. Preferred : Knowledge in a 'smart city' vertical. Expertise in business management and administration. Knowledge of and relationships with municipal leaders in the Greater Washington region.
