Would you like to develop next generation guidance and control methodologies for hypersonic flight? Do you like to find innovative solutions to highly challenging problems? If so we are looking for someone like you join our team at The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. We are seeking a highly talented Guidance and Control Engineer to work with a talented and inclusive team developing next generation guidance and control methodologies for hypersonic flight. We will push the limits of optimal control theory and advance trajectory techniques to maximize system capabilities. Create models from first principles that accurately represent vehicle performance while limiting computational burden. Perform simulations using optimal control software (GPOPS, POST, OTIS, or similar) and interface with nonlinear programing software (SNOPT, IPOPT, KNITRO, or similar) to maximize solver performance. As a Guidance and Control Engineer You will develop techniques to quickly and accurately generate trajectories and guidance strategies for hypersonic flight systems. You will implement optimal control methodologies to increase software performance. You will be involved with vehicle test and evaluation activities. You will document and present analysis findings as appropriate. You will interact with sponsors and representatives of other organizations. You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have A Master's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, applied mathematics, or related technical discipline with relevant experience. Knowledge of flight dynamics, guidance, navigation, and control. Experience with optimal control software such as GPOPS, POST, OTIS, or similar. Experience with nonlinear program solvers such as SNOPT, IPOPT, KNITRO, or similar. Strong computer and programming skills and proficient with MATLAB. The ability to interact effectively with individuals of different experience levels and backgrounds including external industry and military personnel. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Initiative and interest in skill development and the flexibility to accept assignments of varied scope and skill. The ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have A PhD. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, applied mathematics, or related technical discipline with relevant experience in modeling and simulation of flight systems. Knowledge of guidance system hardware for flight systems. Strong knowledge of optimal control theory and/or model predictive control. Experience developing 3-DoF / 6-DoF flight simulations. Experience in parallel programing or GPU programing. Proficiency with Simulink. Why work at APL?
