Job Description * Job Summary * Under the general supervision of the Anesthesiologist In-Charge and the specific supervision of the designated Attending Anesthesiologist, provides professional nursing services which supplement and complement the medical staffs' delivery of anesthesia and pain management patient care services. These functions are performed in accordance with MedStar's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards. * Minimum Qualifications * Education/Training * Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing preferred. * * Experience * 1 year clinical experience in anesthesia/pain management, critical care, operating room, or recovery area(s) required. * * License/Certification/Registration * Valid RN license in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia, or any combination as required based on work locations(s). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required. * * Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * Must have familiarity/experience with anesthesia equipment and physiological monitors. Able to remain calm and perform in emergent situations. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must have good judgment, leadership skills, and ability to set priorities and work independently. * Primary Duties and Responsibilities * CLINICAL CARE: Performs clinical functions during the pre, per, and post-anesthesia phase of care, the performance of block procedures, and the assessment of patients for pain management services. Activities include assisting with the set-up for complex procedures; patient assessment and education; preparation and administration of medications, as prescribed; initiation of lines; assisting with induction; obtaining blood samples; assisting with patient transfer and; assisting with surgical implantation of pain management medical devices; assisting with block procedures; assisting with patient management of the Acute Pain Service and Chronic Pain Clinics; and communicating with clinical personnel, patients and patient families. * RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: In collaboration with the Technical Coordinator and technical staff, coordinates ordering of supplies and equipment; oversees stocking and restocking of equipment and supplies in clinical areas; maintains communication with vendors, as appropriate; monitors equipment functioning and problem solves malfunctions, as necessary; conducts staff education regarding proper equipment use, advances in technology and new equipment; participates in the review and evaluation of new treatment modalities, equipment and supplies; coordinates documentation of QI programs related to equipment; and insures appropriate utilization of department resources. * QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Executes and monitors department plan and activities related to clinical service review through data collection, general and specific record audit, patient interview, preparation of reports, and follow-up of identified QI measures. * CLINICAL COVERAGE: When needed for coverage at a Chronic Pain Clinic, serves as back-up for patient scheduling and registration functions in the Pain Clinic. Prepares encounter forms for Pain Clinic patients when needed. Obtains patients medical records from Pain Clinic as needed. Answers phones for Pain Clinic and greets patients appropriately. Assists with patient care and procedures in the clinic. * Clinical Work Location: Work site will be at any MedStar hospital location as needed for clinical care and coverage on the Acute Pain Service, or at any Chronic Pain Clinic Location, as well as other locations as needed for education and training. However, for continuity of care, the intention is that each Pain Nurse will be located at one site for most assignments. * CLINICAL RESEARCH: Participates in clinical research activities related to the clinical area, as appropriate, including patient recruitment, patient education, patient screening, data collection, record review, obtaining informed consent, and conducting patient interviews. * HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Participates in the orientation of medical staff, house staff, nursing and technical personnel as assigned. * RESOURCE UTILIZATION: Makes effective use of department and hospital resources to minimize waste and prevent damage; and maintains and submits accurate daily records, as required. * SERVICE FACTORS: Exemplifies Customer Service standards in all activities; displays a pleasant and cooperative service attitude towards co-workers, nurse, doctors, management, hospital staff, visitors and patients at all times; and presents a professional image at all times. * Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards.
