Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST): Academic Advisor

The George Mason University Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) within the Volgenau School of Engineering (VSE), seeks a full-time Academic Advisor for students. Responsibilities: This position requires timely academic advising to current, prospective, and transfer students on course selections for the bachelor's and master's Applied Information Technology programs. The IST Academic Advisor will be responsible for creating and maintaining advising reports for tracking, reviewing, and assessing student-advising sessions for accuracy and compliance.

The advisor is responsible for tracking student progress through the degree programs which involves using tools such as Student Success Collaborative; as well as verifying prerequisites, and tracking students in jeopardy of being terminated from the program. Additionally, the position requires the review and approval of student conferrals, intent to graduate, and graduation status reports to ensure program requirements are met. This position requires the incumbent to oversee and regulate IST grading deadlines, procedures, policies, and final grade submissions in accordance with university policy. The IST Academic Advisor will develop and maintain standard and detailed academic reports for the Associate Chair to include, but not limited to: program statistics, academic success, student progress, form-specific data, and various ad hoc student reports as requested.

Limited travel will be required at times between the SciTech (formerly Prince William) and Fairfax Campuses. Some evening and weekend hours will be required for certain recruitment events. The work schedule is arranged so as to be conducive to office needs and applicant availability.

Required Qualifications: * Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize accordingly; * Customer service attitude that projects a competent and positive image of the department; * Experience using Microsoft Office Suite Excel; * Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and * Attendance of GMU, VSE, and IST recruitment sponsored events.

Preferred Qualifications: * Proficiency with Ellucian Banner (INB). Preference will be given to candidates with previous academic advising experience, proficiency using INB to retrieve data for student academic degree audits, course repeats, grades, overrides, grade point average, transfers, waivers, prerequisites, course equivalencies, transfer course articulation, suspensions and terminations; * The ability to identify alternate equivalent courses on transfer course audit and resolve audit discrepancies in INB for students and for reporting purposes; * Master's Degree. About the Department: The Department of Information Sciences & Technology has 28 full-time faculty members. In addition to B.S. and M.S. programs in Information Technology, the department also participates in an interdisciplinary B.S. in Cyber Security Engineering, M.S. in Data Analytics Engineering, and Ph.D. in Information Technology (concentration in IST) offered by the Volgenau School of Engineering.
