Job Description

DESKTOP PUBLISHER / COORDINATOR

You're an experienced desktop publisher-but you're looking for a bigger challenge in your career; one that will test your skills at building ads, using the Adobe CS package, tracking approved/rejected ads and working with different departments at all levels of a major organization. As Desktop Publisher for The Washington Post, you'll spend each and every day involved in a critical mission of building and making sure our ads-from both local advertisers and high-profile, international clients-run in our daily newspaper. It's a fast-paced position that will test your skills in design, accuracy and quality assurance; that will require you to always be at the top of your game; and that will allow you to play a vital part in proving to audiences why advertising in The Washington Post is the best way to achieve solid results.

Responsibilities include:
  • Produce and update ads for Daily, Weekly and Classified products
  • Review finished ads for quality assurance
  • Monitor receipt of ad content
  • Monitor lists of ads that require immediate attention and problem ads (wrong ad size, missing fonts)
  • Perform Assignment Coordinating duties
  • Perform a review (Quality Control or QC) of all ads
  • Perform DAT (Digital Ad file processing)
  • Aide, assist and monitor outside ad agency partner interface


Job Direct
  • Aide, assist and monitor Print and Deliver orders, ad files and vendor contacts
  • Aide, assist and monitor Total Market Coverage (TMC) products (Post Marketplace)
  • Alert appropriate personnel when an ad is rejected/incorrect and verify corrections
  • Keep Advertising Operations informed of all anomalies and follow them to a resolution
  • Keep software skills current as software changes
  • Be constantly open/adaptable to new ideas, processes and technologies


Requirements include:
  • A commitment to excellence in customer service
  • Knowledge of (or ability to learn) XML markup language, Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, and Acrobat software as well as Ad Tracking software.
  • A detail-oriented, accurate, thorough and highly productive work ethic
  • Good troubleshooting skills and problem solving capabilities
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently
  • Ability to work well under pressure within strict deadlines
  • Ability to cross train and learn the back up duties
  • Flexibility regarding work hours and work assignments as a desktop publisher
  • Good verbal/written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with internal/external customers
  • Knowledge of various file formats (EPS, PDF, JPG, etc.)
  • Experience with MAC environment and operating system
  • Ability to follow our Code of Conduct and department rules
  • A general understanding of how the units in our department work together (the overall roles of and links between DAT, Production/Creative, ROP and Classified Pagination, Ad Materials, Sales and Service, Make Up and Output)
