Shearman & Sterling's Washington, DC Office is seeking a Legal Assistant to work with our Litigation team Shearman & Sterling in Washington, DC is offering an exciting Litigation Legal Assistant opportunity in a fast-paced collaborative environment. We are willing to look at candidates who have recently graduated from college, to candidates with 5-6 years of Litigation Legal Assistant experience. Litigation legal assistants work closely with lawyers on litigation, arbitration, investigation and compliance matters and play an important role as members of our case teams. They accompany our lawyers to court, aid in trial preparation and provide support in all aspects of the discovery process, including deposition preparation. Our legal assistants also review client files, help with preparation of court filings and tribunal submissions, cite-check legal memoranda, maintain case files and conduct research. Legal assistants can take advantage of training programs on practice-specific skills and periodic educational programs on a range of topics. Training sessions and engaging in case team efforts aid our legal assistants in honing their research and writing abilities and assuming greater responsibilities and leadership roles. Successful applicants must be able to agree to a minimum two year commitment, have an outstanding academic record and leadership ability as demonstrated through extracurricular activities or work experience, and possess excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills. Additionally, they must be well-organized, able to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and have good judgment and high ethical standards. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Work closely with attorneys on litigation, arbitration, investigation, compliance, and antitrust matters. Aid in preparation for trials, arbitrations, depositions, client meetings, presentations. Assist with document reviews and preparation of document productions, witness kits, privilege logs, digests, chronologies, indices, trial and arbitration binders. Assist with preparation, coordination, and distribution of court filings and tribunal submissions. Monitor, organize and maintain central records of files per firm and practice group protocols. Prepare working group lists; actively monitor case correspondence for updates and developments. Conduct research and prepare case books utilizing Westlaw, Lexis, and utilize other research services, as needed. Utilize advanced functions of business suite applications such as Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Utilize eDiscovery platforms including Relativity. Draft and proofread legal documents, correspondence and memoranda. Utilize business equipment, ie, photocopying, scanning, database entry, word processing, etc. Coordinate work with outside document/litigation vendors, including adherence to strict deadlines. Cite-check, Bluebook, KeyCite/Shepardize briefs; prepare tables of authorities and contents; assemble exhibits to filings and submissions. Attend practice group and case team meetings. Prepare and release daily diaries, weekly timesheets and Current Availability System reports. Carry out other responsibilities as may be assigned.
