This student position is located in the Manipulation and Mobility Systems Group of the Intelligent Systems Division in the Engineering Laboratory at NIST.

This is a Student Internship opportunity under the Pathways Program.

The pathways student will conduct research in the areas of robotic grasping and manipulation. This work will involve supporting computer scientists and engineers to develop and implement performance tests for robotic grasping and assembly.

• Must be enrolled at least half time at a qualifying institution
• Must possess a grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher out of a 4.0.

All applicants must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, degree) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled). In addition, you must be enrolled in school for the duration of the appointment. You will be required to provide documentation to support your eligibility for the program.

Applicants must possess a grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.If you are submitting an acceptance/enrollment letter from your university you MUST also upload your last known unofficial transcript containing your cumulative GPA. If you do not provide proof of GPA, you will be disqualified from further consideration.

Applicants must be enrolled in a directly related degree program.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Applicants must be pursuing a degree in computer science or a degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must include any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

Applicants must submit proof of current enrollment as a student and display cumulative GPA.

Education

PROOF OF ENROLLMENT FOR THE CURRENT SEMESTER. This may be documented on your official/unofficial transcripts, a course schedule, an acceptance letter from your university for future enrollment, or an official letter of enrollment from the university registrar's office or a university counselor, as long as your enrollment for the current semester is clearly documented. If you do not provide proof of enrollment for the current semester, you will be disqualified from further consideration.

If you are currently enrolled, but in your last semester/quarter of completing your degree/certificate requirements, you must show proof of continuing education, such as an acceptance letter, or you will be disqualified from further consideration.

This position has an education requirement. You must submit a copy of your unofficial transcripts to document that you have met the education requirement. Official transcripts will be required prior to a final offer of employment.

Foreign education: Individuals educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for a U.S. equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. Additional information

As a part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION: Program participants may be non-competitively converted to a career-conditional, career, or term position within 120 days of successful completion of the program, but there is no requirement to do so.

To be eligible for conversion, the intern must:

• Meet the OPM qualification standards for the position to which s/he will be converted
• Have completed academic study from a qualifying institution
• Have completed at least 640 hours of work experience while in the Internship program; up to 320 hours may be credited from other qualifying federal Internship appointments or non-federal work experience toward the 640 hours
• Receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the Agency

Pathways participants may be converted to a permanent or term position within any NIST career path. If converted to permanent or term position, the full performance level would be: ZP-III

You will be in a trial period throughout your entire Pathways appointment.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your resume, optional cover letter and supporting documentation will be reviewed to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications for the position. The scored occupational questionnaire will evaluate you on the following competencies; please do not provide a separate written response:

* Skills in software development and debugging in C++, Java, Python, or other common programming languages.
* Experience in a laboratory setting running experiments and performing data analysis.
* Experience with basic mechanical design using computer aided design software and 3D printers.
* Ability to present technical information both orally and in writing.
* General knowledge of robot kinematics.
