Summary

Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

Incumbent will provide a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including assessment and the most appropriate psycho-therapeutic techniques to provide quality geriatric care as a consultant to the Community Living Center (CLC) including hospice and units of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities
-Performs (GEM) consults for CLC residents when admitted to Medical Center units.

-Provides telehealth psychiatry services including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and dementia in the Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Program.

-Participates effectively in interdisciplinary and focused team meetings, treatment planning conferences to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care within the Community Living Center, Geriatric Specialty Care Unit, Palliative Care Service, and HBPC.

-Subject matter expert in minimizing the use of anti-psychotics and anti-cholinergics in geriatric residents.

-Provides outpatient consultation to residents in Community Nursing Homes (CNH).

-Orders diagnostic tests and consultations to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment recommendation.

-Ensures that the practice of psychiatry is consistent with Long Term Care Institute (LTCI), Joint Commission (JC), VA Central Office and Local policies and procedures, clinical practice psychiatric guidelines, Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) policies, and HIPPA policies.

Academic/Teaching/Training
-Involved in the supervision and teaching of psychiatry and other discipline residents and other trainees assigned to unit.
-Serves as subject matter expert to provide guidance and consultation to dementia committee, staff, and leadership
-Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and assist in implementation of treatment plan as appropriate regarding their patients.

Administrative:
-Completes in a timely fashion all appropriate clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center
-Participates in Peer Review, performance improvement, and quality assurance initiatives
-Completes all other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (8:00AM - 4:30PM) Weekend, evenings and Holidays as needed

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/29/2020.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board certification, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for General Psychiatry

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent needs to be mobile in that the job requires: sitting, walking, standing, and bending. Work requires trips daily from employee's work-site to other areas throughout the Medical Center

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
