Summary

You will serve as a Microwave Instrument Engineer performing work with electronic instrumentation systems in the microwave through sub-millimeter wave used for detecting, recording, measuring physical conditions, phenomena, and environments for Earth and space science programs.

Responsibilities

  • At the full performance level:
  • Designs and develops electronics from the microwave through sub-millimeter wave; designs or directs development of leading-edge technologies, components or instrument systems to meet specific mission requirements.
  • Serves as a technical specialist in the field of high frequency electronics, executing complex designs on various advanced electronics projects.
  • Participates in the specifications requirements, acceptance testing, and evaluation of new technology, equipment or systems.
  • Provides technical guidance to contractor counterparts regarding new or complex aspects of assignments in developing new procedures, equipment, systems, or tools or in performing the work required by the contract.

Qualifications

Additional Qualification Requirements : In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirements you must have one year time-in-grade at the GS-07/09/11 level respectively and meet all aspects of specialized experience which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

GS-09
1. For this particular position you must have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service designing and testing of microwave circuits or systems instrumentation, and troubleshooting electrical systems and/or general electrical hardware.
OR
2. Completed all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree in an appropriate field.
OR
3. Completed 2 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field.
OR
4. Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in 1, 2 and 3 above.

GS-11
1. For this particular position you must have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service designing and developing microwave systems including instrumentation, preparing design documentation and specifications; and troubleshooting microwave systems.
OR
2. Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field.
OR
3. Completed 3 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field.
OR
4.Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate education as discussed in 1, 2 and 3 above.

GS-12
For this particular position you must have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service designing, analyzing, and testing electronic instrumentation systems in the microwave through sub-millimeter-wave bands.

Education

In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement
You must have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science, Other fields of science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of undergraduate or graduate education only:
Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (except power), Electronics Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering. Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics (or other related field), if includes or is supplemented by two courses in solid state physics, materials, optics, statics and dynamics, electricity and electronics, electron optics, kinetic theory of gases, electromagnetic propagation or radiation, semiconductors, vibration, high vacuum theory, information theory or heat transfer.

ABET accreditation requirement applies to foreign education. Applicants who have completed part or all of their education outside the U.S. must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization to ensure that the foreign education is comparable to the education received in accredited educational institutions in the U.S. If selected, a written evaluation of any foreign education must be provided to the Human Resources official making the offer. Please indicate in your resume that you have had your foreign education formally evaluated. Failure to provide this evaluation will result in your being found unqualified for the position.
