Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protects the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 26,000 building and site plans, issuing nearly 60,000 building permits, and conducting over 216,000 building and site inspections each year. Performs highly technical and advanced engineering work of a paraprofessional nature in the office, exercising independent judgment and initiative; and performs related work as required. Provides technical interpretations, reviews and evaluate construction documents of residential and light commercial construction projects for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and related codes and standards during the plan review process. Communicates development regulations to contractors, builders, engineers, other governmental agencies and the public. Meets with homeowners, developers, builders, engineers, contractors and citizens to answer their questions about the applicability of the county building regulations to code requirements.

Employment Standards

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus four years of engineering technical support work.

VDHCD Residential Building Plans Examiner (Required within 18 months)

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background to the satisfaction of the employer.

Strong customer service skills. Clear and concise oral and written communication skills. Ability to read/interpret construction documents to verify compliance with applicable state and local codes. Familiarity with the Virginia Construction Code and the International Building Code.

Ability to stand, bend, squat and twist upper body up to an hour; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Visual acuity to read data and construction documents on computer monitors. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds such as boxes of files and large construction plan sets. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and may include practical exercise.
