Job Announcement

For the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program, operates and/or coordinates operation of technical equipment utilized for landfill gas reuse projects. Operates and maintains landfill gas flares, landfill gas wells, wells and pumps and other control systems related to the needs and regulatory requirements of the division. Assists in technical development of gas collection and implements changes in the field. Participates in specification development for technical equipment utilized at the operating facilities. Assists with the stormwater and groundwater sampling program, providing program support at sampling events and coordinating with external contractors. Assists other engineering technicians with technical work, collects and maintains data associated with environmental compliance and infrastructure. Performs varied and difficult technical work in gathering and analyzing data for implementation in the field. Makes computations to determine the quantity and type of construction and operation equipment and estimates costs. Researches and evaluates new equipment for potential application at the landfill and maintains supplies. Designs simple structures. Performs more difficult physical or chemical tests and analysis associated with landfill operation and executes specialized inspections. Performs all operations in compliance with safety practices established in the Solid Waste Management Program Engages in safe working practices and complies with the DPWES Safety Competencies.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Stormwater Inspector Certification. Five years of experience constructing, operating or maintaining landfill systems. Two years experience maintaining and monitoring gas wells.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's License (Required)
Confined Space Certification (Required within 6 months)
Waste Management Facility Operator's Lic. Class II (VA) (Required within 12 months)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to access tight spaces, crawl, reach, and stoop. Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Work requires performing tasks in adverse weather conditions. Work requires performing tasks in an environment in which raw waste is present. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Is required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview may require an exercise.
