SENIOR PARALEGAL – INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Washington, DC

Large, DC law firm is seeking a Senior Legal Assistant for their International Trade practice.  The Senior Legal Assistant will work as a member of the Legal Support Team to cite-check and file court and agency documents, prepare appendices and exhibits, perform factual and legal research, and maintain documents and databases.

1,500 client-chargeable hour requirement; 1,700 total billable hour requirement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

(The Firm requires that the duties and responsibilities of this position be performed on site, during scheduled work hours and outside of scheduled work hours, as required by workload)

  • Working with attorneys and other practice Legal Support staff on client-billable projects, including but not limited to, cite-checking and filing legal briefs and memoranda; identifying and preparing complex appendices and exhibits; organizing and managing case documents; research; and preparing court forms and applications
  • Maintaining current knowledge of cite-checking and filing requirements at the Court of International Trade (CIT), the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC), the Department of Commerce/International Trade Administration (DOC), and the International Trade Commission (ITC)
  • Preparing documents for filing with courts and agencies, including standardizing formatting, inserting tables of contents and authorities, and ensuring consistency with jurisdiction requirements
  • Filing documents electronically with courts (PACER/PACER NextGen) and agencies (ACCESS/EDIS)
  • Serving as a primary point of contact for large and complex filings within the practice
  • Being able to locate and interpret rules and regulations at the above-mentioned courts and agencies in order to assist with maintaining case filing schedules and calendars
  • Diligently adhering to administrative protective order (APO) requirements, ensuring proper redactions of business proprietary information (BPI), and following internal protocols for the safe handling of documents
  • At attorneys’ or Practice Manager’s direction, acting as a liaison between attorneys, clients, and agency and court representatives via written and oral communications
  • Working effectively with a team of attorney and staff personnel to further client goals
  • Assisting with the training and oversight of Project Assistants and other staff in the preparation and submission of court and agency filings, general practice area support, and related projects
  • Meeting the Firm’s minimum hours expectations of 1,500 client-chargeable hours and 1,700 total billable hours annually
  • Other duties as assigned by attorneys, the Practice Manager, and the Director of Legal & Practice Support

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least five (5) years of primary litigation responsibility
  • Prior paralegal experience required; experience with antidumping/countervailing duty proceedings preferred
  • High proficiency with cite-checking, Bluebooking, preparing exhibits and appellate appendices, and electronic filing
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both in oral and written form
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and coordinate deadlines, and track progress of tasks
  • Ability to organize workflow and use time efficiently
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials
  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationships in and out of a team environment, including collaborating and sharing knowledge
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to mentor, train, and supervise entry-level staff
  • Willingness to learn and adopt new methodologies
  • Flexibility to work overtime on an as-needed basis

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position operates in a professional office environment which is usually quiet to moderate
  • Position requires that the employee have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment and flexibility to work outside of normal business hours

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is primarily a sedentary position however, some duties and responsibilities are required which would require the applicant to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, occasionally move about to access office equipment, file cabinets, etc.
  • Local travel to courts and agencies within DC may be required
  • Ability to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds
