The Opportunity:
The Sentara CarePlex Hospital (SCH) divisional Vice President has two primary focus areas:
First, the position is part of the Sentara Western Tidewater leadership team, which is responsible for the execution of a market based strategic plan. The VP has specific market responsibilities as part of the overall Sentara Peninsula team.

Secondly, the executive responsible for being part of the senior team of Careplex and works to achieve the organization's short and long-term objectives and to provide leadership for viability of the hospital. The position oversees assigned departments to assure quality patient care and service within the fiscal and philosophical guidelines of Sentara Healthcare. Additionally, the position coordinates external and internal support for effective operations and aligned with corporate departments to achieve established goals and objectives. Participates with key leaders of the community, management, medical staff, clinical staff and the entire SCH medical campus to successfully execute goals and objectives. They will be responsible for the direction and coordination of the business and operational activities of departments assigned

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and foster effective collaboration between departments, other divisions, medical staff leadership, and other affiliated services (inside and outside of the hospitals) to ensure an integrated approach to providing services, and fulfilling the mission, market, medicine and members of the team goals and objectives.
  • Manages the staff in accordance with the Sentara Healthcare operating philosophy . Establishes performance goals, position expectations, allocates labor resources and contributes to the development of human resource policies.
  • Provide administrative direction to direct reports by applying specialized and technical knowledge in the implementation and execution of the planned programs while ensuring Sentara's mission and strategic direction is followed.
  • Works to communicate and reinforce a vision for the hospital that emphasizes strong and effective physician relationships, the creation of new business opportunities, ensure dedication to customers, responsiveness to healthcare reform and changing reimbursement patterns.
  • Recommend improvement of hospital facilities , including construction and/or renovation of structures and purchase of new equipment as necessary.
  • Drive growth, clinical quality and financial performance of a major product line of clinical service across the Sentara system. They will lead the product line program with strong physician-hospital alignment to improve the quality of care.
  • Professionalism : Conducts all business engagements with honesty and integrity.
  • Communicate openly and effectively, internally and externally, with a wide variety of individuals to ensure that their needs are being met and that the reputation of the company is enhanced, while maintaining strict confidentiality .
  • Leads monitors and operates with accountability : Implement and/or develop systems to monitor and ensure compliance with productivity standards, performance standards and position competencies.
  • Budget Development and Assures that Plans are implemented as planned : Develops and monitors current and projected capital and operating budgets, initiating corrective action when substandard financial performance occurs.
  • Maintain compliance with laws, rules and regulations governing hospitals and healthcare practitioners as well as the standards of accrediting bodies by monitoring operations and initiating changes where required.

  • Experience in leading high-performance teams : Candidates should be proven leaders with a record of accomplishment leading teams and achieving results through the contributions of that team. Sentara Careplex Hospital operates with a matrixed leadership model with dual reporting relationships to the system executive responsible for the specific function.
  • Consistent record of accomplishments and the capability/flexibility to operate effectively leading change as well as effectively managing change at the hospital level.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the skills of Adaptability and Flexibility: Must function well in a dynamic environment and be agile enough to seize opportunities that present themselves.
  • Innovation: The candidate should have experience in innovating new products, service lines, and programs to achieve the goals for the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the confidence to represent the organization in both formal and informal settings. Transparency and an open communication style will be important as the facility grows and becomes a healthy "disruptor" in the market. He/she must be accessible and deemed approachable by employees and physicians.
  • Physician network development and management , and clinical quality and process management .
  • Broad Understanding and Experience within the Health care continuum .


Education Level
A Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or a closely related field.

• 8 years of progressive hospital or healthcare related operations experience in leadership/administration is strongly preferred.
• A minimum of 2 years at a recent or current Director Level and experience managing large teams are both preferred.
• Experience in leading a system initiative involving matrixed responsibilities to achieve system goals.
• Experience in service line team leadership with specific deliverable outcomes.
• Consistent performance in meeting financial, quality, Patient Satisfaction, Employee Satisfaction, Safety and Strategic goals.
• Be an individual who desires to become a CEO of a Hospital or major division within Sentara.
