Summary

This position is for a Nephrologist at the Salem VA Medical Center. The physician is accountable for the provision of direct patient care and for the delivery of quality standard of care to a culturally diverse Veteran population with complex needs. Primary duties include providing inpatient and outpatient Nephrology consultations, performing acute and chronic dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, home dialysis, care of transplant patients and pre transplant patients.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but not limited to, the following:
  • Provide direct professional Nephrology services to patient in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Evaluation and treatment of patients with known or suspected renal disease, hypertension, kidney stones, acid- base abnormailities, electrolyte imbalances.
  • Provide medical and technical support and supervision to any Nephrology residents and/or students.
  • Provide and/or participate in the resident didactic and clinical care education program, fulfilling the requirements of the AMA Council for Medical Education, for any residents, students, or fellows clinically affiliated with the Salem VAMC, as applicable.
  • Providing inpatient and outpatient Nephrology consultations, renal clinic evaluation and follow up, performing acute and chronic dialysis, and participation in on-call duties after hours, on weekends, and on holidays as needed.
Work Schedule: Full Time; M-F
Tour of Duty: 7:45 am to 4:30 pm

Education Debt Repayment Plan (EDRP):
This position is eligible for Education Debt Repayment Plan (EDRP) based upon the availability of funds. Award amount is determined after review of complete EDRP application and supporting documentation. Final approval by the Under Secretary for Health or designated official verifies EDRP.

Market Pay:
Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/20/2020.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS :
  • Staff Physician: None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed and accredited residency and or Possess experience with has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized function and procedures with our supervision. Staff physicians may also include attending who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs and consults who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting; prolonged standing and sitting; frequent bending; walking (distance); climbing; reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive); repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall; reasoning; problem-solving; hearing; speaking clearly; writing legibly; reading; logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities; frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions; and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
