This position is located in the Office of the Deputy Secretary, Office of Administrative Law Judges(ALJ). This office is responsible for conducting adjudicatory hearings and issuing decisions for the Department of Labor under more than 70 different laws and executive orders.

Responsibilities

THIS IS AN OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUCEMENT WITH AN INITIAL CUTOFF DATE OF 10/15/2019 Note: Cut off dates may be scheduled on any date greater than or equal to today's date. On the day after each cut off date, new applicants will be added and updates will be merged to a new staging area or to the existing open staging area, depending on the staging area option selected for that cut date. All applicants who applied on or before the cut date will be included in the new or updated staging area.

Major duties for this position include but are not limited to, the following:

Draft proposed decisions for the Judge's review and approval which systematically cover all of the legal points in the case and the rationale and the reasoning for the decision.

Develops and prepares complex orders which require legal research and discussions of points of law to respond to motions or pleadings, to compel discovery, and to otherwise prepare the cases for hearing; drafts responses to pre and post-hearing motions.

Prepares pre-hearing synopses and/or reports of cases which set forth the facts and issues in the case; the procedural history of the case; the medical and other evidence presented, the conflicts in the evidence, and evidence which needs further clarification; the employment record of the claimants; pleadings; issues in the case; and provisions of the laws related to the case and case law and its interpretation which may be germane to the case; carries out other duties to prepare cases for hearing.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Requirement: This position requires completion of a first professional law degree (LL.B or J.D.)

Transcripts: You must provide a copy of your transcripts to be considered for this position, verification of your academic degree(s) is necessary to determine your qualifications or eligibility for this position, you will be required to submit an official transcripts for verification purposes before you are hired. However, unofficial transcripts may be submitted during the application phase of the process. Please note that your J.D. or LL. B degree must be conferred before you can begin working.

In addition to your transcripts applicants must also provide a writing sample with your application in order to receive further consideration.

Applicants that are current law students who will graduate within three (3) months of this announcement closing are eligible to apply to the vacancy.

Appointments as a Law Clerk are limited to 14 months during which time the appointee must be admitted in good standing to the bar of a court of general jurisdiction of a state, territory or possession of the United States. If selected and the employee provides proof of admission to the state Bar; the employee may be converted to a new appointment for up to 2 years with possibility of extension to a third year. Upon conversion, the position becomes Attorney-Adviser, GS-0905-11.

Education

A LL.B or J.D. is a requirement for this position. If you do not submit sufficient academic documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility and minimum qualification requirements described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete and you will be ineligible for further consideration for this vacancy.
