Department of Computer Science Postdoctoral Research Fellow

The George Mason University Department of Computer Science within the Volgenau School of Engineering, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow to perform research in the areas of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Machine Learning (ML). About the Department: The department has over 50 faculty members with wide-ranging research interests including artificial intelligence, algorithms, autonomic computing, computational biology, computer graphics, computer vision, databases, data mining, parallel and distributed systems, real-time systems, robotics, security, software engineering, and wireless and mobile computing. Responsibilities: The successful applicant will help drive research in the design of novel search, optimization, and ML frameworks and their interface with computational biology. A collaboration group work of spans these areas, so publication-documented prior experience in them is desirable.

The successful applicant will join a vibrant research group and will assume a leadership position in directing PhD, MS, and undergraduate students, as well as collaborate with researchers across domains and disciplines in research, dissemination, and grant proposal writing. While the main focus is on problems in computational biology, the position provides the opportunity, via various collaborations, to expand to other application areas in civil engineering, human-machine teaming, human-computer interfaces, psychology, and more.

The ideal applicant will have broad expertise in AI and ML, publications on high-dimensional, nonlinear optimization, a solid theoretical background, and evidence of both theoretical and application-driven work. Prior expertise in computational biology is advantageous but not necessary.

Required Qualifications: * Ph.D in Computer Science * An earned doctorate by the start date of the position * Excellent programming skills in C++ and Python * Familiarity with other programming languages * Evidence of mentoring and managing other students

Preferred Qualifications: * Candidates with prior experience and expertise in one or more of the areas outlined above.
