Assistant/Associate Professor of Urban Sciences (Tenure-Track Cluster Hire)

The College of Science (COS) is pursuing a multidisciplinary effort to strengthen the Urban Science initiative, facilitated through the Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP), the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS) and the School of Systems Biology (SSB). This new initiative will elevate the capabilities of these units and foster cross-unit collaboration. The key themes for the positions are Urban Informatics (GGS), Urban Ecology or Urban Wildlife Ecology (ESP), and Cancer and Precision Medicine in the Urban Community Setting (SSB). The proposed Urban Science cluster hires, together with already existing expertise in these Departments as well as the rest of the college, will establish a core transdisciplinary team that will allow us to continue innovation, establishing new academic offerings, and pursuing substantial research opportunities.

The cluster hire consists of three distinct positions in three different academic units. In order to be considered, candidates must submit their application materials to each of the positions of interest individually. Assistant/Associate Professor of Urban Wildlife Ecology (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for a Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Urban Ecology or Urban Wildlife Ecology to be part of a cluster hire in Urbans Systems within COS. This is a full-time, Tenure-Track position is scheduled to begin in August 2018 or January 2019.

Responsibilities: We are seeking outstanding candidates with expertise in urban wildlife and/or landscape ecology, and the ecological, cultural, and economic forces that shape the environmental quality of urbanized areas. We are especially interested in applicants with research that addresses the impacts of environmental disturbances on urban ecosystems and the role of any ecological conditions and developmental patterns that occur within an urban development. Expertise in wildlife urban ecology and wildlife-human interactions is necessary. This is a highly interdisciplinary faculty position that will be part of a team in the college working on the Urban Systems initiative on new urban spaces their geography, environment and health. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an externally funded research program as a team player and to collaborate with other researchers across the college and the university to enhance transdisciplinary research. To support this work, the position includes start-up funds and a GRA for two years. In addition, the successful candidate will have access to significant resources at the Science and Technology Campus in Manassas, including the Shared Research Instrumentation Facility, as well as resources at the new Potomac Science Center, where ESP's Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PEREC) resides for collaborative research in Belmont Bay.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program in their area of expertise, as well as teach and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate level (Master's and Ph.D.). This position will teach required graduate and undergraduate courses in urban ecology, urban wildlife ecology, human-wildlife interactions; and related disciplines. Possible courses include Urban Ecology, Urban Wildlife Ecology, Urban Landscapes, Human-Wildlife Interactions, and participation in the department's undergraduate Environmental Science major core sequence. Service activities within the ESP and the College of Science are expected.

Required Qualifications: * Successful completion of a Ph.D. in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field prior to the first day of the appointment; * The ability to share the department's commitment to interdisciplinary education; * Excellence in research demonstrated by publication record in peer-reviewed journals; * Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program; * Commitment and interest in teaching lecture and laboratory courses at the graduate and undergraduate level; * Strong commitment to mentoring and supervising graduate students; * Candidates must have the ability to collaborate with other natural scientists and social scientists in research, teaching and outreach. Preferred Qualifications: * Post-doctoral experience in urban systems, urban ecology, urban wildlife ecology or related field as well as traditional environmental science and policy is highly desirable; * Record in seeking and securing extramural research support evidenced by proposal submission and/or recipient of funding awards; and * Successful team work in a collaborative environment.

About the Department: ESP is well known for its truly interdisciplinary faculty focused on environmental natural and social sciences. ESP also includes additional graduate program faculty from across the university and numerous affiliated environmental professionals. The following degrees are awarded: B.S. in Environmental Science, B.A. in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Public Policy. The Department also partners with the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation in Front Royal, VA, to offer graduate level courses in biodiversity and conservation.
