Dewberry is currently seeking a Water Resource Engineer for our Fairfax, VA office. This position is for a project level water resources engineer to support water resource projects including flood hazard, risk analyses and production efforts in support of FEMA Flood Insurance Studies/Risk MAP projects, and engineering support required on projects involving flood risk assessment, storm water management and development of resiliency solutions. Candidates will be working with Federal, state, local municipalities and other governmental agencies providing a wide variety of engineering support tasks and development of resilience solutions. Tasks include riverine and coastal hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling with GeoHMS, GeoRAS, HECHMS, and HECRAS, as well as other H&H software, for FEMA Flood Insurance Studies to establish flood hazard engineering and mapping. Candidates should have experience with Geographic Information Systems and the ESRI platform. Responsibilities

Technical responsibilities include:
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for modeling and mapping floodplains and floodways in riverine and interior urban areas
  • Analysis, and modeling of urban drainage and stormwater infrastructure including LID BMPs and green infrastructure practices
  • Developing as a Technical Leader and Subject Matter Expert for Water Resources Engineering through performing engineering analysis and progressively building proficiency with complex projects
  • Mentoring more junior staff to continuously improve the quality of Dewberry's deliverables and development of innovative solutions
  • Production of Flood Insurance Studies and Risk MAP products and updating related geospatial databases
  • Developing flood risk products and performing flood risk assessments
  • Assisting assigned Project Manager with developing innovative and technical solutions for successful delivery of engineering projects; and c oordinating with the project team, project managers, clients, local communities, and other contractors to compile all data necessary to produce the most up-to-date product
  • Ability to assist on water resources and resiliency aspects of multi-disciplinary projects for integrated water resources planning and watershed master planning


Required Skills & Required Experience

Required Skills:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, a Masters in Water Resources Engineering is highly preferred
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in hydraulic and hydrologic (H&H) modeling/ Water Resources engineering (preferably with FEMA National Flood Insurance Program, USACE IWR, and EPA)
  • Has an EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification, a Professional Engineer license (PE) or eligible to obtain PE in 1-2 years
  • Experience with the FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program, including Flood Study Reviews preferred
  • Experience Mentoring Junior Engineering staff
  • A track record of active participation in the flood management or water resources community including published papers, presentations, and active organizational membership
  • Knowledge of, hydrology and hydraulics modeling is necessary to perform expected duties
  • Knowledge of floodplain delineation, storm water management, culvert and bridge hydraulics, and drainage design, preferred
  • Familiarity with HEC-1, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, GeoHMS, GeoRAS, WinTR20, WinTR55, 2D urban floodplain modeling experience using PCSWMM, XPSWMM, MIKE11, MIKE URBAN, is preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Ability to work in a team environment


Desired Skills:
  • Experience / knowledge in geospatial programming using Python
  • Experience developing for the ESRI platform (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcObjects, ArcSDE, Arc Engine)
  • Knowledge of Resilience and Sustainability as related to Water Resources
  • Knowledge of the National Flood Insurance Program is preferred
  • CFM (Certified Floodplain Manager) is a strong plus
  • Knowledge of Watershed Planning a plus
  • Knowledge of stream channel and floodplain restoration is a plus
  • Innovation, enthusiasm, and creativity - ability to develop new ideas and to chart a path
  • Ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks concurrently.
