Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Responsibilities

  • Operate dump trucks in a safe manner in tight areas and along high speed roadways.
  • Pull a variety of large roadway trailers to haul track and wheel type equipment, haul debris, stone, gravel, soil, etc.
  • Safely ramp equipment on and off trailers.
  • Operate front-end loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, or excavators (or a combination of this heavy construction equipment) on steep slopes, rocky or soft ground or other surfaces with similar rough features to push, pull, pile, excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to exact specifications.
  • Operate one or more types of engineering equipment to plow snow and/or provide ice and snow removal/winging on steep roadways and next to drop-offs.
  • Operate heavy equipment safely in tight areas, steep slopes, rough terrain, and high traffic areas.
  • Operate heavy equipment and vehicles safely, recognizing limits of operation for each piece.
  • Complete work assignments following complicated or complex oral instructions that require determining alternatives and making decisions.

  • Plan work for the day in order to minimize down time and return trips for tools and supplies.
  • Use hand and power tools associated with road maintenance and repair activities such as plate and foot compactors, chain saws, metal cutting saws, pumps, generators, crack seal pots, chains and chain binders, shovels, rakes.
  • Assess and analyze work sites for safety issues, and design work to mitigate them.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License .
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

    Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines, pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation, and lifting such items as opening and closing tail gates on dump trucks. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the frequent adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.

    Working Conditions: Operation of large and complicated equipment in difficult circumstances increases exposure and risk of injury. Works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes while welding and/or other fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. Worker is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.
