The National Press Club is seeking a Director of Membership, responsible for the workflow process related to recruitment and retention of existing Club members. The Membership Director reports to the Executive Director. The Membership Director will work directly with the Executive Director, to develop programs, initiatives and policies designed to increase membership growth and engagement. The Membership Director will develop the strategic direction for the membership portion of the business

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategy for membership acquisition and retention
  • Create, update, and market information for current members as well as prospective members
  • Direct, administer, and supervise all membership outreach activities
  • Develop membership budgets in collaboration with the Executive Director and Finance Director
  • Responsible for the workflow process related to recruitment and retention of club members Manage a staff of 3 - 4 full time professionals
  • Interact successfully with peer level staff including but not limited to: Financial Director, Director of Membership Administration, Executive Director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute, Director of Clubhouse Operations. Director must interact successfully with elected Club Officers including: The President, The Membership Secretary and the Membership Team Leader Work with Director of Membership Administration to ensure that new members are notified of Board approval, added to the system and billed correctly
  • Develop and maintain a successful member benefit program  

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • 4 – 6 years of management experience including but not limited to: recruiting, retaining, reviewing, motivating, coaching, and training staff
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills are required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience developing and directing a membership organization that included recruitment and retention of individual members
  • A solid working knowledge of the journalism field is required
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with journalists
  • Strong relationships with journalism leaders as well as rank and file journalists
  • Direct journalism experience
  • 2 + years’ business management experience – having worked in a business and not just non-profits
  • Budgeting and forecasting experience
  • Sales and marketing experience are a plus
  • High level of integrity and work ethic Ability to work individually and as part of a team
  • Should have ability to use or learn to use the following: Sales Force, Jonas, and Social Media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Able to work evenings as needed  

Education 

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
