Summary

About the Position: The Pediatric Unit offers access to high-quality critical care to Pediatric patients ranging from newborn to 18 years old that require close monitoring and support from specialized equipment and medication. Position requires incumbent to perform rotating shift work. Prolonged periods of walking and standing are required, as well as the ability to lift, bend, and stoop, i.e., in assisting patients.

Responsibilities

  • Identify changes in a pediatric patient?s signs and symptoms and intervene in emergent situations.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality in nurse/pediatric patient relationships.
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal physical findings.
  • Serve as the advocate for the pediatric patient.
  • Participate in pediatric patient?s plan of care.
  • Analyze situations to anticipate pathophysiological problems and detect changes in status.
  • Administer medication using age-appropriate guidelines.
  • Determine a pediatric patient?s needs related to pain management.
  • Provide supportive care as needed to pediatric patient and family.
  • Assist pediatrician or other health care professionals by assessing a patient's needs and providing initial patient care.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • You must undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual season influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempt for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for a Nurse (Clinical/Pediatrics):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) in their resume, which includes: providing comprehensive nursing care for patients within an inpatient medical treatment facility; assessing pediatric patients; operating medical equipment; coordinating care for pediatric patients; updating patient records/charts AND possession of a diploma, associate's degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

OR

Education Substitution: Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.

Education
