Summary

The Deputy Director, Engineering, works closely with the Director and other organizations to ensure that all Center plans and work are consistent and well integrated within the overall Center strategy and operating plan. The Engineering Directorate (ED) functions as a core resource for providing systems engineering and discipline engineering skills to the rest of the Center.

Responsibilities

  • Shares responsibility with the Director in executing funded program and project elements; ensuring development of selected capabilities needed to support programs and build future capabilities, programs, and elements aligned with NASA mission needs.
  • Teams with the Directorate to collaborate and negotiate with product units to supply resources to meet Center commitments and develop future systems engineering capabilities.
  • Working with the Director, manages the Directorate budget and oversees all workforce hiring and workforce development.
  • Serves as focal point for relationships with the Langley Product Units, Core Resource Units and the Mission Support Offices.

Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience, normally with several years at the GS-15 level or equivalent, which demonstrates clearly the ability to manage people and resources. Candidates must also demonstrate qualifications in the managerial and technical areas noted below. SES Technical Qualification Questions

1. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the application and advancement of sound engineering principles and practices across the product lifecycle of aerospace systems and supporting infrastructure, including the formal review of engineering products and resolution of technical issues.

2. Demonstrated ability to lead a large multi-disciplined engineering organization providing system and discipline capabilities for the design, development, test and integration of complex aerospace systems in support of multiple aeronautics, exploration, science and technology mission programs.

3. Demonstrated effectiveness in communicating highly technical information, recommendations and guidance, spanning a broad range of engineering activities, to all levels of an organization including employees, management, stakeholders and customers.

Education

Candidates must possess an engineering degree, preferably an advanced degree from an accredited engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university in a closely related engineering discipline
