The Central Virginia VA Health Care System is seeking an experienced Medical Instrument Technician.The Medical Instrument Technician is aligned under Medical Service at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA.The incumbent will serve as an Electrophysiology Technician in the Cardiac Catherization/EP Lab

Responsibilities

Duties for this position include but not limited to:

Primarily responsible for the smooth operation of the lab during EP studies.

Sets up of the EP Lab for procedures, which includes set up of the EP tray, multi-channel recording equipment (ART), patient hook up and obtaining a 2-lead electrocardiogram, assisting with the transport of patients to and from he EP lab, and coordinating the room cleaning between cases with housekeeping.
.
Maintains and monitors the computer system used for recording EKG's intracardiac electrogram, and pressure, possess knowledge in the use of the computer, defibrillator, RFA generator, and be able to operate this equipment independently.

Possess the ability to operate the Cardiac Stimulator and perform programmed stimulation under physician supervision.

Assists the cardiac electrophysiologist in performing the invasive cardiovascular procedures and functions at a level of technical expertise, function independently.

Scrubs, circulates, and operates equipment, etc., on the most complex examination and treatment procedures, and intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for very critical patients.

Mentors and trains lower graded technicians, nurses, nursing students,and cardiopulmonary technology students on cardiac catherization procedures.

Assists the cardiac electrophysiologist in performing the invasive cardiovascular procedures and functions at a level of expertise.

Ability to independently operate and maintain all hemodynamic monitor equipment in addition to diagnostic recording equipment.

Demonstrates the ability to recognize equipment malfunctions, troubleshoot and initiate all equipment maintenance and repairs.

Prepares ECG electrodes and defibrillator patches at the start of each surgical procedure.

Operates equipment, monitors, and collects data from pacemaker and ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) programmers and analyzers during surgical implantations to verify proper device function and lead placement and documents device implantation data.

Possess a current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certificate.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
  • Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.

Grade Determination:

GS-09: Experience:
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catherization technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA's and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catherization Laboratory.
*2 Knowledge of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
*4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
*5 Ability to provide or provide for staff development and training.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is a GS-09.

Preferred Experience: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable. Basis Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements for this position include standing , walking, lifting patients, transporting programming equipment. The work involves participating in lengthy, difficult procedures. Above average dexterity is required to calibrate and operate the technical equipment. Positioning and lifting patients may require considerable effort and working in awkward positions.
