The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information.

Under the direction of an Assistant Director of Health Services, supervises and manages a team of professional/paraprofessional staff, including Public Health Nurse IIs and IIIs, and School Health Aides. Promotes and supports population health by providing management, leadership, public health, and nursing expertise. Must possess experience collecting and analyzing data to make informed decisions, and have experience promoting health initiatives designed to encourage health equity and strong community engagement. Must be a highly professional service-oriented leader with strong problem solving and critical thinking skills. Uses quality improvement and performance management processes and/or techniques to improve service delivery and student health outcomes. As a member of the School Health Management team, collaborates with colleagues to support and enhance school health services. Works within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to achieve desirable outcomes for students, families, and communities. Promotes individual and population health by assuring the quality and accessibility of school health services, preventing the spread of disease, promoting and encouraging healthy behaviors, and responding to disasters and assisting communities in recovery.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus five years of post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education, including three years in a public health/community health setting. Qualifying experience may include experience in ambulatory care settings such as outpatient clinics that incorporate community outreach/education as part of services or specialty settings that incorporate teaching, community outreach, resource referrals, etc. as part of a health care continuum; Plus at least one year of supervisory experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Possession of current license or a multi state licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification required within 60 days
  • AED certification required within 60 days

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background investigation, a Child Protective Services (CPS), a driving record check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred candidate will have a masters' degree in public health, public administration, nursing, or a related degree with at least three years of progressive leadership experience in public health or community health supporting population health in a culturally diverse setting. At least two or more years of post-licensure experience providing health services to school aged children in a public school setting and at least three years of demonstrated experience working in a public health or community health setting working within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams. Preferred candidate will have at least two years of direct supervisory experience overseeing, monitoring, and directing the work of others. Proven team leadership skills with a commitment to development of staff. Must have strong data analysis skills. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population. Highly desirable to have experience with care coordination of children with special needs, health promotion/health education, and data management and reporting. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal and external partners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs and carrying equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Have the ability to read and write in complete sentences in English and operate keyboard driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
