Instructor of Practical Applications in Linux

The United States Naval Academy invites applications for an Instructor of Practical Applications in Linux. Candidates should have strong technical skills in managing and employing Linux systems, and a commitment to undergraduate teaching and project-based learning, across a variety of disciplines that involve computing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides unique hands on training and experience to Midshipmen in project-based learning, primarily on Linux-based workstations and servers. 
  • Develops lab and course material for use in computing classes.
  • Provides assistance to Midshipmen with independent research and capstone design projects.
  • Operates and maintains servers, primarily Linux-based file and web servers that support the academic curricula.
  • This is a federal excepted service position. Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or closely related field; or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field, with practical experience equivalent to the Master’s Degree.
  • Experience with operating and administering Unix/Linux computer systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with advanced system administration of Unix/Linux systems.
  • Classroom teaching experience.
  • Expertise with scripting languages such as bash and Python.
  • Experience with design, development, and administration of web and database applications.
  • Experience integrating Unix/Linux systems with Active Directory domains.
  • Experience administering virtual environments and virtualization software, such as VMware ESXi.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking.
