Position Information

Are you a seasoned facility manager who knows aquatics and fitness? Can you develop community support and success in a facility? Then dive in as the General Manager of Arlington's premier recreation facility!

Arlington County is seeking a vibrant General Manager (GM) to spearhead the opening and operations of the brand new, and highly anticipated Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. The GM will provide excellent customer service, strong leadership in the operations of the facility and create diverse and attractive programs for the Arlington community. The GM will be hired in advance of the facility opening and will be tasked with hiring a new staff and ensuring the proper procedures are in place for opening day.

Specific duties include:
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the center while creating policies and procedures for staff;
  • Managing budgets to include personnel and non-personnel;
  • Ensuring the facility is operating under the Water Facilities Ordinance of the Arlington County Code;
  • Tracking data and performance measures for internal and external reporting;
  • Collaborating with DPR staff to place programs in the facility;
  • Soliciting and managing large events in the facility to drive revenue;
  • Working in conjunction with the Maintenance Technician to create maintenance plans to maintain a clean and efficient facility;
  • Working with DPR staff to create a robust and attractive program plan for both wet and dry programs while leading a marketing effort to drive memberships to the facility;
  • Working with the DPR Administrative Services Unit to collaborate with first day of registration operations; and
  • Overseeing groups and teams renting the facility.

About the Center:

The Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center is the County's first membership-based recreation center and will be a regional destination for competitive swimming and recreational opportunities and has something for everyone! For those looking to fuel their competitive side the new facility includes a 50-meter pool with 1-meter, 3-meter, and 5-meter diving, a whirlpool, and two bulkheads to create more opportunities in the pool. The 50-meter pool is FINA compliant for long and short course competitive swimming, water polo, and synchronized swimming. On the other side of the facility, the fun never stops in the family pool. This pool includes a splash pad for tots, a water slide, 4-25-yard lap lanes areas for swim classes and lessons, in-water volleyball & basketball, and a lazy river.

On dry land, the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center includes an 8,000-sf. fitness center with a variety of cardio and fitness equipment. There is a fitness studio, three community rooms, and two wet-classrooms for fitness classes, parties, and gatherings. Outdoors this new development includes 10.5 acres of new parkland for casual use, the extension of the esplanade, and outdoor space for festivals and special events. Selection Criteria

Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Sports, Facilities, or Business Management or a related field plus considerable experience in recreation/sports and facility management.

Substitution: Additional directly related experience can substitute for the education requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to those with one or more of the following:
  • Master's Degree in Recreation, Sports, Facilities or Business Management or related field;
  • Facility Management Professional (FMP) certification;
  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certifications;
  • Experience managing recreational facilities and programs in a local government setting;
  • Strong knowledge of RecTrac or similar web-based scheduling, registration, and payment system; and/or
  • Strong knowledge of lifeguarding and best practices related to pool safety.


Additional Information

Work Hours: 40 hour weeks. Schedule may vary based on the facilities schedule of events. The position is required to work nights and weekends on occasion.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave : Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year.

Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs.

Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status.

Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan.

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay.

Other Benefits: The County also offers health, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; long-term care insurance; tuition assistance; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other employee benefits.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.

Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
