A surgical assistant is one who assists the surgeon in the performance of any surgical procedure, working under the surgeon's direct supervision. S/He acts as first or second assistant to the surgeon, has extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, scrubs for operative procedures assists in moving and positioning patients for surgery , assists the surgeon in draping of the patient retracts tissue and exposes operating field area during operative procedures, clamps and ties blood vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry, keeps the operative site dry, affords the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation, assists the surgeon in identifying any structure that should not be ligated and keeps those structures from the operative site by retraction, is prepared to anticipate the moves of the surgeon, is knowledgeable in all surgical procedures sufficient to assist the surgeon in any way , knows all of the instruments used in any procedure, assist in closure of the incision including tying of bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressings. Finally, s/he keeps abreast of new developments in surgery by attending seminars, workshops and other educational activities.

• Graduate of an approved and accredited surgical assistant program
• National Certification
• 5-7 years of experience as a surgical assistant
• Must meet appropriate performance and proficiency training protocol approved by the Chief of the Department of Cardiac Surgery
• Strong communication skills
• Strong customer service skills
• Diplomacy skills when interacting with patients, families, physicians, and others disciplines
• Demonstrate evidence of team work and team building

Work Schedule:

Full-time days; Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 4:00 pm.
