Supporting the Most Exciting and Meaningful Missions in the WorldLaw Clerk - Claim ReviewPerforms initial review of claims for eligibility and non-economic loss compensation claims for legal sufficiency.Analyze and organize documentation for supporting evidence; determining mechanisms to perfect insufficient claims .Provide recommendations to Department of Justice Leadership about the appropriate disposition of claims, including the amount of loss that should be awarded.Initiate proactive communication with claimants and claimants' attorneys to clarify issues relating to particular claims and to ensure that complete information is provided.Follows guidance provided by the Department of Justice Leadership Office and claim review supervisors in processing claims. Maintains relevant claim information in the claims management database.Other special projects as assigned.QualificationsMust be able to obtain a security clearance.Law degree, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.Experience in reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing claims, with the ability to apply established criteria to determine legal sufficiency.Experience in analyzing and organizing documents for supporting evidence and determining mechanisms to perfect insufficient claims.Strong Excel skills with experience using complex workbooks. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including experience working with the public (claimants) and with external attorneys (claimants' legal representatives).Requires excellent research and writing skills, demonstrated experience working with complex statutory and regulatory schemes, and flexibility and creativity in the application of existing policies.Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including Microsoft Suite, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.Requires excellent and thorough knowledge of legal research tools.
