The Department of Communication at George Mason University seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor or a tenured Associate or Full Professor of Communication with a demonstrated research program taking a relational approach beginning in August of 2020.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related field, a strong record of research, an ongoing research agenda, a demonstrated record of teaching excellence, a commitment to department and university service, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Specific areas of research should be consistent with departmental emphases in health communication and strategic communication, and may include interpersonal, family, organizational or other traditional areas of communication studies. The department has a blend of quantitative and qualitative researchers and is open to receiving materials from candidates with quantitative and/or qualitative expertise. A record of research focusing on diversity, underserved groups, vulnerable populations, or similar areas from a relational perspective is a strong plus.
About the Department
Mason's Communication Department has a collegial faculty committed to excellence, innovation and social relevance. We expect reasonable participation in the life of our community, including career fairs, faculty functions, recruiting sessions and other events. We offer a broad undergraduate program with more than 700 majors; five minor programs; a large M.A. program including strategic, health and science communication specialties; and a focused Ph.D. program emphasizing health and strategic communication. The department also offers graduate programs in science communication. Additionally, the department supports several co-curricular activities, including debate, forensics, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Society for Professional Journalists, and a comprehensive student media organization (newspaper, radio, television, sports announcing, magazine and journal editing, etc.).
The research life of the department includes both undergraduate and graduate research, and is reflected in the activities of its faculty, including the Center for Climate Change Communication, the Center for Media and Public Affairs, and the Center for Health and Risk Communication.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities of the position include developing a research program, contributing to the teaching needs of the department, and mentoring students. The successful candidate will have experience in and a commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. Competitive candidates, in addition, should be eager to enhance undergraduate and graduate concentrations to meet the needs of a diverse student body.
Required Qualifications:
* Successful completion of a PhD in communication or a related field, prior to the first day of appointment; * Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program; * Record of teaching excellence; * Expertise in quantitative/qualitative research methods; * Relational approach to answering communication questions; * Commitment and interest in teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Demonstrated experience in developing successful funded research collaborations; * A record of research focusing on diversity, underserved groups, vulnerable populations, or similar areas from a relational perspective; * Record of service to the department, school and discipline (for tenured candidates); * Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students (particularly for tenured candidates).
