Post Doctorate 2020- New Testament and Origins of Christianity

George Mason University invites applications for a 12-month Post-Doctorate position in New Testament and Origins of Christianity to begin in fall 2020 with possibility for annual renewal through spring 2023.

The successful candidate will be a core faculty member of the Department of Religious Studies within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and must hold a PhD in the field of New Testament studies (or related course of study, e.g., Early Christian Literature) by the time of appointment.

Responsibilities: Within a 2-2 teaching load, the successful candidate will be expected to teach standard introductory religious studies courses and lower through upper level undergraduate courses on New Testament and Christian studies appropriate for a public university.

Required Qualifications: * Broad knowledge of biblical and early Christian literature (both the texts that became the canonical New Testament and other related writings of the prior and later centuries through late antiquity); * Proficiency in the languages relevant to the study of early Christianity and its source materials (e.g., Classical and Koine Greek, Hebrew, Latin, etc.); * Applicants must have completed a Ph.D in a related field prior to the first day of the appointment; * Literary and historical skills; * Understanding of the wider Graeco-Roman world, including Second Temple Judaism; * A compelling research agenda that promises original and significant work in the field; * Competence in teaching a range of courses in New Testament, Bible, and early Christianity; * An interest and ability to engage with other scholars of religion and across the university (e.g., gender and sexuality; identity and power; race and ethnicity; literary and material culture; histories and modes of transmission, reception, and reinterpretation of ancient thought, etc.).
