If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. The Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group at APL is seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer with an understanding of maritime and aviation platforms to help us rapidly develop field-able, autonomous sensor systems. We adopt new technology to envision tomorrow's solutions for a diverse set of government organizations. We develop sensor systems to collect information in some of the most austere environments around the globe that help our partners complete their mission. Come join our multi-disciplinary team of engineers and support staff working in labs on our main campus in Laurel, MD. As a mechanical engineer your primary responsibility will be developing innovative electro-mechanical systems to support rapid development and prototyping of sensor systems for airborne, ground-based and maritime ISR applications. . You will lead engineering teams from concepts through design/analyses, development, fabrication and testing processes . You will conduct design reviews and laboratory and field testing to verify systems meet specifications and standards . You will specify, identify, and integrate commercial and custom components for the rapid development of systems . You will document system development, engineering analysis and testing consistent with quality requirements and present information to review teams . Qualifications . You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you . Have a BS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Ocean Engineering . Have 5 to 10 years of related experience in electro-mechanical design using CAD(preferably SolidWorks), CFD, stress (statics, dynamics), and thermal analyses using FEA software. . Have a demonstrated an ability and willingness to multi-task across several projects and work independently in small teams while meeting quick turnaround demands . Are willing and able to work in classified laboratories and willing to travel around the world to conduct field testing for 15% of your time . Can interact effectively with team members of different experience levels and backgrounds, including leadership of teams and projects . Have knowledge of manufacturing processes . Possess an active DoD Secret clearance and able to obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subjected to a government security clearance investigation and be able to meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship . You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you . Have a MS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Ocean Engineering . Have experience in UAV flight dynamics . Have experience in fielding systems in maritime environments including deep ocean . Have 15+ years related experience in SolidWorks, OrcaFlex, MATLAB, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, STAR-CCM (CFD) a plus . Have practical knowledge of Additive Manufacturing processes. . Have demonstrated technical or project management leadership of complex electro-mechanical systems . Working knowledge of government/military contracting procedures, standards and specifications .
