This is a general summary of the responsibilities associated with the position of Facility Specialist - Repair and Fabrication Technician for the NIH, Laboratory Animal Research Contract (LARC). This description is not inclusive of all required duties. It is intended to reflect SoBran's contractual obligations to the LARC. Employees are expected to complete all assigned duties each day. OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Facility Specialist - Repair and Fabrication Technician for SoBran's animal care contracts. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Duty schedules are set at the discretion of the unit supervisor and/or SoBran Management to meet the requirements of the contract. Eight hour shifts typically occur between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm weekdays, and 6 am to 5:30 pm weekends and holidays. However, employees may be required to work beyond their scheduled shift or on non-scheduled days and times as dictated by support requests and unanticipated or emergency situations. This person is expected to have a general familiarity with day-to-day activities in multiple facilities working with multiple types of laboratory equipment. We expect the Maintenance, Repair and Fabrication Technician to be forward thinking and able to use their knowledge of basic facility practices to accomplish a wide array tasks. This position's responsibilities include: Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. Tack and seem welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment. C uts work pieces using grinders, powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife. Installs or repairs equipment, such as racks/cages, carts, shelving, and other equipment as assigned by Management or the TPO/TPOC. Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments. Removes rough spots from equipment using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper. Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler. Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc. Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations. Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques. Make minor repair to carts and other assorted equipment (ie castor replacement). E xperience working with and making repairs to pressurized water lines (PVC, copper, CPVC, Stainless). Maintain a schedule to insure equipment that requires routine greasing is performed. Secures all appropriate permits and follows NIH regulations for performance of duties. Must be able to lift heavy objects; bend, stoop, climb, stand and work in hot and humid environments for prolonged periods. Safely handles and disposes of hazardous (biohazardous, radiological, or chemical) and non-hazardous materials. Perform all other duties as assigned. EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Employees' appointed to the position of Maintenance, Repair and Fabrication Technician must meet the following standards prior to appointment: Education: A High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a certified welding program preferred. Certification: Welding Certification from the American Welding Society preferred. Experience: Candidate must have 5-7 years' experience with general equipment repair, facility/equipment maintenance functions and MIG/TIG welding of stainless steel and aluminum.
