The Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) is a 100+ year old organization that embarked on a holistic modernization 2.5 years ago thus becoming a '100 year old start up'. As part of the modernization efforts, changes to infrastructure, processes, policies and people have occurred in the first phases of evolution. The MSBA is now seeking a Director of Operations & Governance to help guide it through the next phase of efforts and beyond. This individual will provide the highest level of operational, project management, financial and administrative leadership and be an integral part of the organizational leadership team. The overarching goal of this role is to ensure that the organizations' operations related to people, process and technology are effective and that governance of the MSBA is aligned and supported in its performance to achieve the strategic objectives of the organization. This role reports directly to the Executive Director (CEO). Visible Leadership & Communication- is routinely communicating and driving our organization and departmental visions in a clear and positive manner, adjusting style and delivery as appropriate Strategic Orientation - thinks and plans at the highest level and works across the association to develop goals and plans to support the strategic direction Talent Management Expertise - demonstrated ability to attract, select, develop, and retain top talent working with our various outsourced providers Idea Creation - routinely generates new solutions or changes to existing solutions to better meet the needs of the business or to capitalize on an opportunity Process Orientation - demonstrated ability to break down activities into defined process steps with clear owners in order to improve quality and/or cost and efficiency; working with both internal and external resources Change Management - can implement new ideas and process while considering cultural and resource related concerns Strong Budgeting & Forecasting Skills - owns the annual budget development cycle and in-year results reporting and forecasting processes Expert Analytical & Modeling Capabilities - can direct activities to acquire and organize data, convert to information, communicate insights, and influence outcomes Systems Acumen - provides decision support and oversight for systems Passion - generates consistent positive energy felt by those around them Teamwork - is able to work collaboratively with individuals of varying styles and backgrounds Responsibilities Supports the activities of our Board of Governors, President, Executive Committee, General Committees & Sections; includes collaboration with the Executive Director to strategize on efforts and develop corresponding agendas, project plans, presentations, and generally facilitate outcomes via meetings and engagement of varied stakeholders/groups. Serves as the primary liaison for the Bylaws, Strategic Implementation, Membership & Solo/Small Firm Section to ensure each committee is supported and actively pursuing the stated objectives; works collaboratively with the Executive Director and respective Chairs in establishing approaches and methods to achieve desired outcomes Manages the technology & marketing outsourced services partner to ensure optimal alignment of efforts and achievement of outcomes; seeks ways to innovate in the delivery of capabilities in more cost effective ways Ensures that HR administration is accomplished via our third party payroll and HR providers or by directly addressing in conjunction with the Executive Director Serves as a back up to the Executive Director as liaison to the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Budget and Audit Committee Directly manages a team of 6-8 staff in the areas of membership service, sections & committee management, governance & meetings and planning. Qualifications Bachelor's degree MBA or advanced degree preferred JD, CPA or CMA designation desirable 8+ years of professional experience Demonstrated ability to manage cross functional teams and complex projects from concept to implementation Demonstrated leadership capabilities Technological orientation critical Association management experience desirable but not required
