The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to provide editorial support to the Publishing Office. This work includes fulfilling editorial assignments, preparing written communications, and program support.

Organizes and compiles proposals for new publications and maintains records of publishing decisions. Maintains and updates project status charts and the publishing database. Participates in planning sessions for new publications and assists in the development of publication proposals.

Conducts primary and secondary research, verifies facts and sources, conducts copyright research, clears permissions for reproducing material under copyright, orders scans, compiles art logs, proofreads and copy edits text.

As assigned, reviews and edits manuscripts and typeset copy for grammar, punctuation, spelling and style, according to the Chicago Manual of Style. Eliminates grammatical and factual inconsistencies and inaccuracies. Assists with the compilation transmission of completed manuscripts.

As assigned, drafts copy for captions, credits, sidebars, and non-book items, such as calendars. Ensures timely updates to the Publishing Office web page, drafts promotional material, and oversees the production and distribution of the annual catalog.

Communicates with appropriate internal and external staff concerning the status of production schedules and marketing campaigns for publishing projects. Facilitates design and layout of cooperative publishing proposals.

Maintains print and digital files of all projects, including illustration, editorial, and marketing files. Archives and compresses digital folders of completed projects, and submits archives of completed publications to Records Management. Maintains Publishing Office archive and in-house inventory of active publications. Performs routine scanning of images.

Routinely screens Publishing Office email account and consults with colleagues to write appropriate and professional replies.

Compiles and distributes agenda, proposals, and other background material for editorial meetings. Represents Library and Publishing Office at events such as National Book Festival.

Assists Lead Writer-Editor in guiding and informing the work of interns and volunteers.
