Responsibilities

You will work with and lead a small group of mechanics and helpers engaged in the performance of all kinds of machinist tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels and in connection with miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard.

Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties include:

* Leading a group of employees and personally performing all kinds of machinist tasks including machining castings, forgings, and bar stock of various metals and metal alloys.

* Using surface plates, precision blocks, sine bars, height and surface gages, scales, dividing heads, and similar devices, establishing reference points and laying out work piece to provide a means of locating points and surfaces during machining operations.

* Setting up appropriate cutting tools and installing and aligning them in machine.

* Performing grinding operations.

* Performing precision hand work to match or finish parts by chipping, filing, scraping, hand reaming, hand tapping, grinding, lapping and polishing.

* Explaining critical phases of the work to subordinates.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:

* Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic);

* Measurement and layout;

* Ability to use hand tools for machine shop;

Spouses of military members who are on retirement or separation PCS orders from active duty are not eligible to be appointed unless the member was injured with a 100% rating; or was released/discharged from active duty due to the member's death while on active duty. Widows or widowers, who are not remarried, of military service members who were killed on active duty must submit a DD-1300.
